19th Century House in the Pays de la Loire
Sablé-sur-Sarthe, 35 kms from Le Mans, in Western France
3 bedrooms, sleeps up to 8 people
Le Domaine de la Houssaye
The house, built in 1850, is a fine example of 19th century architecture in the Pays de la Loire and makes a comfortable base from which to enjoy this lovely region. The house lies in over a hundred acres in the middle of a plain below a forest, near the village of Sablé-sur-Sathe, 35 km from Le Mans, famous for its motor sports (at least one event per month throughout the year including the 24 hour event in June) and 10 km from Solesmes. Tours is about 90 minutes from here, Paris just over 2 hours.
The house is full of charm and very comfortable. On the ground floor is a living room with a corner fireplace and television, a spacious dining room with a large monastery table and a big, fully equipped kitchen with oven and hob, refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher and microwave. There is also a bathroom with shower, washbasin, wc and a washing machine.
There are three bedrooms on the first floor, two have double beds, the third has both a double and a single bed. The bathroom has a shower and separate wc. Bedlinen is of good quality and available on request. There is a telephone (using phone cards) and central heating for the winter months. The park and gardens are there for you to enjoy freely and there is a large terrace with garden furniture and a barbecue, a pond with swans and ducks and a vegetable garden where you are welcome to help yourself to any vegetables in season.
The Area
Nearby, there are riding stables and a swimming pool (4 km), a 35-hole golf course (8 km), numerous walks, good cycling routes and cruises on the Sathe river. The village of Sablé-sur-Sathe has a market on Monday, Friday and Saturday mornings with stalls filled with fresh local produce, (look for the famous rillettes du Mans and the delicious petits sablés). It has all essential shops and three large supermarkets. The Benedictine abby at Solesmes, where you can attend a mass to hear some of the finest singers of Gregorian chants, is well worth a visit. The village of Malicorne has been making pottery since the 18th century (bring an extra bag). Le Mans has an extremely attractive medieval centre and is famous for motor racing and in June, the 24-hour race covering over 3000 miles. Near the track is a large motor museum open through the year. There is also zoological park in La Flèche and a lake with supervised swimming, which children love. Within reach are the beautiful châteaux of the Loire Valley and Angers, surrounded by the Anjou vineyards, has good shopping and numerous restaurants. Travel Information
