A place for all seasons, La Petite Auberge is a charmingly converted 17th century Perigordine farm set in lovely rolling countryside offering 2, one bedroom self catering gîtes and 2, two bedroom gîtes and a further six rooms bed and breakfast in the Auberge. The property stands on the edge of an ancient river valley and has one and a half acres of grounds set out with swimming pool, sun terraces, gardens and shady areas, with a further sixteen acres for strolling and playing in. We also have a small a lake with perch, ideal for fishing.
For many years the Auberge has been recommended in Fodor's France, The Guide du Routard and Charming Small Hotels Guide to France. It is well known for its warm welcome, friendly atmosphere and tranquility. The Auberge is situated on the border of the Dordogne with the Lot-et-Garonne, 18 kms south of the historic town Bergerac and the famous Pécharmant vineyards just north of Bergerac and 4 kms from the picturesque bastide village Eymet. It is equidistant between Sarlat and St Emilion (both 50 km). Communications are first class. One of the major 'green routes' from northern Europe through to Spain is just 4 kms away. The international airport and mainline TGV railway station at Bordeaux are about 2 hours away and locally, Bergerac airport has regular flights to and from the UK, Paris and other European countries. The journey from the Normandy and Brittany channel ports takes about 6-10 hours.
The Gîtes La Poulailleris an independent cottage, La Ferme is part of the long stone building that was once the original farmhouse and barn, La Petite Maison, which is also part of the original farmhouse and Le Studio, which is a self-contained studio apartment. Le Poulailler, one of the original farm buildings is now a delightful holiday cottage with a small private garden, a sunny southwest facing terrace and a second east-facing terrace, which is an ideal spot for breakfast in all seasons and a place to rest out of the sun. The view from the cottage is of the ancient river valley, which is part of the natural garden. The accommodation comprises two bedrooms (one twin, one double), shower room and a separate wc. The comfortably furnished main living room is in the form of an 'L' and opens on to both terraces. The gîte sleeps four people. La Ferme, part of the original 17th century farmhouse has been converted to provide spacious accommodation with two bedrooms (one twin, one double), a bathroom and separate wc, a large and comfortable kitchen/living area with a door to the patio and secluded private garden which offers sun and shade. It sleeps up to 4 people. La Petite Maison is a tastefully furnished, one bedroom gîte, consisting of a kitchen/dining area, lounge, bedroom and en-suite bathroom. The gîte has its own private patio and is ideal for 1 or 2 people. Le Studio was also part of the original 17th century farmhouse and is now a self-contained studio apartment with a corner kitchen, lounge/dining/bed area. It also has an en suite bathroom. Le Studio is also fitted with central heating for winter lets and is also ideal for 1 or 2 people. La Ferme and La Petite Maison, combined by an interconnecting door, can be available as a six bed gîte. All the gîtes are furnished and equipped to a high standard. Kitchens have a fridge/freezer, cooker, microwave, toaster and coffee machine. La Ferme and Le Poulailler have washing machines and dishwasher. Gas, electricity and heating are included in the price of all weekly rentals. A full set of bed linen, towels, tea towels and table cloth are also provided. There is a library of English books and a games area (board games, darts, card table) on the mezzanine area of the main lounge in the Auberge. The Auberge In addition to the gîtes there are six double bed and breakfast rooms in the Auberge; four of them en-suite, one equipped for those with reduced mobility. There is also a large and comfortably furnished private guest lounge and bar with television in the Auberge. The Area
For those who do not wish to while away the days by the pool there is much to do locally. Golf is an attraction in all seasons. There are many golf courses within a 40 minute drive. They range from par 72, 18-hole courses to 9-hole shorter courses. Riding, tennis, canoeing, watersports and fishing can all be enjoyed nearby and the area is ideal for walking and cycling, especially in the cooler season. Many happy days can be spent tasting a variety of local fine wines. Bergerac is famous for its quality red wines, which are often a fraction of the price of those of the neighbouring Bordeaux region. The sweet and golden AOC Monbazillac wines are now enjoyed throughout the world both as a dessert wine and as an aperitif with with foie gras or pastries. The delightful medieval hilltop village of St Emilion and the Bordeaux area are just 50 kms away and Wine Fair in Sigoules, which takes place annually in July (10 minutes away), is popular with locals and visitors alike. Food generally is part of the joy of the region. Restaurants range from Michelin starred to country village ones, frequented by local people on a daily basis (always a good sign). Whatever level, they will be good value and modestly priced. Make your mouth water by thinking of foie gras cooked in Monbazillac with apples, sliced breast of duck with shallots and wild mushrooms, quantities of sweet, juicy tomatoes that taste like tomatoes, half a dozen different sorts of lettuce, young succulent artichokes, dozens of different local cheeses, wild strawberries, walnut tart, fresh bread ….. Pre-history and history. The Perigord calls itself the Pays de l'homme, as the oldest remains of early man dating back 17000 years were found here. The Lascaux cave paintings are considered to be the most remarkable in the world. Besides Lascaux, there are many other prehistoric sites and caves, beautiful restored chateaux, a huge barge for river trips on the Dordogne river at Bergerac; the list is endless and all within reach. We have a quantity of information about them all. Local festivals and fetes are always a marvellous way to experience the way of life here and to share the experience with local people is part of the pleasure of the holiday. For example, on Bastille Day (14th July) there is a street party and a splendid fireworks display at Bergerac. Travel Information
