Cottage On An Organic Farm Beside The River Lot
Close to Villeneuve-sur-Lot and the Dordogne, SW France
3 bedrooms, sleeps up to 6 people. Private pool.
Lalosse
The cottage is part of a working organic vegetable farm near the village of Sainte Livrade sur Lot and is peacefully situated on the banks of the River Lot, which flows past the bottom of the garden. Originally the ancient plum drying oven, it has been extensively restored with lots of character and comfort.
We are just outside Sainte-Livrade, which has all essential shops, French and Vietnamese restaurants, a pizzeria, banks, a post office, doctors and a pharmacy. There are tennis courts and riding stables and you can hire canoes and bicycles. The town is completely given over to a large market on Friday mornings with lots of fresh farm produce, clothes and fabric. The little bastide village of Casseneuil is close by and also has shops and a boat club, where you can hire canoes. The Cottage has a spacious open plan living/dining room with sofa and chairs, television, hi-fi, telephone/fax, books and games and a fully equipped corner kitchen with dishwasher, microwave, electric coffee pot and toaster. There are three bedrooms, one double, one twin and one with double bunk beds and a bathroom with shower and a washing machine. Fireplace and central heating for the winter months. The living room opens onto a sunny terrace by the river, which has comfortable sunloungers. There is another shady terrace looking on to the garden and there are sunbeds, a hammock and a barbecue. There is also a private swimming pool, swings and we have a small animal park much loved by children, beautiful Frison horses and even an available stable on the farm. The Area
There are golf courses at Tombeboeuf (9 holes) and Castelnaud de Gratecambe (18 holes), and you can rent boats at Castelmoron for a day on the river. 15 minutes away, is the Magic Chaudron, an angora goat farm where you can buy beautifully made sweaters, feed the kids and even help with the milking and to make the cheese. And the bee museum, where you can learn about the life of these charming small creatures and taste their honey and visit the prehistory park with underground caves, dinosaurs and a picnic area. The Lot-et-Garonne is a great fruit growing region, particularly plums, which are made into a variety of products (try the chocolate ones!) and you can visit the museum and try everything. At the Abbaye des Automates at Clairac, you can see how the medieval life of the monks was once lived with animated characters and close by is a museum with trains, miniature cars, dolls and, the magic forest. 25 minutes away are two lakes where you can swim, fish and picnic, or visit the Foie Gras museum at Frespech, or the lovely bastide towns of Penne d'Agenais, or Monflanquin, which has a good market on Thursday mornings. 35 minutes away is a nature reserve in the Gavaudun valley with animals, plants and restaurants, and there is a large theme park near Agen. The châteaux of Bonaguil, Biron and Born are well worth seeing and the ancient bastide town of Monpazier in the Dordogne has a colourful farmers market on Thursday mornings. An hour or more away are the cities of Bordeaux and Toulouse (1½ hours), the beaches of the Atlantic coast (2 hours), Lourdes (2½ hours) and the mountains of the Pyrénées and the Spanish border (3 hours).
