18th Century Country House with Swimming Pool
Durfort-Lascapelette, between Agen and Cahors in the Midi Pyrenees
5 bedrooms, sleeps up to 10 people

Sereine

Secluded, overlooking lush, peaceful countryside and surrounded by four acres of garden, the house has been well restored with all modern comforts in keeping with the traditional style. The rose coloured clay brick walls, beams, and stone and terracotta tiled floors are typical of this area. It lies in the far south of Quercy close to the village of Durfort-Lacapelette (4.5 kms) and Moissac (14 kms), between Agen (50 kms), Cahors (55 kms) and Montauban (40 kms). Toulouse and the airport are 90 minutes away.

Durfort-Lacapelette has a mini supermarket and bar, a bakery and very inexpensive village tennis courts, which are open to anyone. Moissac has all essential shops and lively and colourful markets on Saturday and Sunday mornings. At several neighbouring farms you can buy farm produce, foie gras, duck, pâtés directly. Within reach are several small restaurants in Miramont-de-Quercy, Bourg de Visa and Beauville in neighbouring Lot-et-Garonne, where you can eat well and inexpensively.

The house is very light and airy and warmed by the sun all day long. It is comfortably furnished with country fabrics and furniture, which is child and animal proof (our cat will show you!). There are two large terraces where you can eat outside or sit and enjoy the evenings.

On the ground floor is a large fully equipped kitchen with a big fireplace. It has an oven and microwave, fridge, freezer and dishwasher and opens onto a terrace and a veranda with a washing machine and dryer. The living room has television, video and a hi-fi. There is a twin bedroom with a bathroom with a shower, and a separate wc.

Upstairs is a large double bedroom with a wardrobe and two chest of drawers, two twin bedrooms with wardrobes and a chest of drawers each and a bathroom with a bath, shower and two washbasins, and a separate wc.

On one of the terraces is a studio with a double bed and a bathroom with a shower, washbasin and a wc.

The swimming pool has been warmed up by the sun at this time of year and is in a sheltered spot some distance from the house, so that you can make as much noise as you like without disturbing anyone. It is fenced so those children playing in the garden are safe. At the bottom of the garden there are raspberries and you are welcome to pick as many as you can eat and we would be grateful if you would occasionally water the plants.

The Area

There are many walks around us with well sign posted trails, including part of the ancient St Jacques-de-Compostelle pilgrim route. Sauveterre (15 kms) has a very pretty 9 hole golf course and Castelnaud-de-Gratecambe (40 kms) has an excellent 18 hole golf course. At Montaigu de Quercy there is a lake with a base for water sports and St Nicolas de la Grave has another water sports base and riding stables.

Lauzerte (8 kms) is a charming medieval bastide village with a central market square, ancient streets, gardens and fine views of the countryside. There is a Tourist Office on the square that has lots of information both in French and English. La Fermeraie du Jougla near Lauzerte, has lots of animals, scores of different breeds of chicken, wild pigs, sheep and is a great place for children.

Moissac (14 kms), is prettily situated above the River Tarn and is noted for what remains of the magnificent Romanesque church and cloisters of the 12th century abbey of St Pierre, which has fine frescoes and woodcarvings. Surrounded by orchards, the markets here in summer and autumn are especially abundant. The Canal du Midi nearby has boat hire bases.

Montauban (35 kms), has an interesting old part which has pavements patterned with black and white pebbles leading into the 17th century red brick central market square surrounded with beautiful vaulted double arcades. Frequent open air markets, shows and entertainments are held here and there are good shops and food shops in the streets around. The museum dedicated to the painter Dominique Ingres has a fine collection of his work.

Toulouse (90 kms), makes a good day out. Known as the rose city because of its terracotta and ochre buildings, it has a lively atmosphere, good shopping, restaurants and cafes, theatres, museums and markets
