Traditional Cévennes House with pool in Southern France
5 km from Saint-Maurice-de-Cazevieille, near Nîmes
3 bedrooms, sleeps 6/8 people

Le Mas Cubieres

This is a traditional Cévennes Mas, built at the beginning of the 18th century and set amongst grapevine in three hectares of open garden with lovely views of the Cévennes mountain range in the distance. It's a place with a great sense of space and silence, where you can draw on the wild, natural beauty around.

The Mas is 27 kms north of the old Roman city of Nîmes and 15 kms south of Alès. Uzès, one of the prettiest villages in the Provence Gard, is 17 kms west of here and Avignon is less than an hour. The Mediterranean beaches along the coast are about 45 minutes by car.

We live in an apartment in part of the house, but are completely independent and private.

The ground floor has a large living room/dining room with a fireplace, television, video, DVD and music and there's a big, fully equipped kitchen, including an oven and hob, microwave, dishwasher and washing machine, toaster and coffee machine. There is a bathroom with shower, washbasin and wc and, a veranda leading onto the terrace.

Upstairs are three bedrooms, two doubles and one twin with double bunk beds; there is also a bathroom with a shower, washbasin and wc. The house is furnished with old English furniture.

Outside is a terrace where you can eat, a large, flower filled garden and a swimming pool (6 x 12 metres) with a poolhouse and bar.

The Area

Saint-Maurice-de-Cazevieille has all essential shops and there are lots of reasonably priced restaurants to choose from, within an easy drive. There are tennis courts and stables nearby, if you like to ride. Vezenobre is a medieval village 6 kms away and well worth a visit.

Uzès, is another medieval village and a great favourite with writers and artists. It has several music and dance festivals through the summer and a wonderful market on Saturday mornings, cafes and restaurants and a 9-hole golf course.

Nîmes has an 18-hole golf course and lots of shops and restaurants. The city has some excellent museums and a well preserved Roman amphitheatre, not as large as the one in Arles, but still used for mock gladiator fights and chariot races. Try to see the ornamental 18th century gardens in the quai de la Fontaine, which also contains a ruined Temple of Diana. The Tour Magne nearby, an octagonal watchtower, built in the 1st century, has wonderful views from the top.

Aigues-Mortes, on the way to Montpellier from Nîmes, is a perfectly preserved walled town and an essential stop. It's best to park outside between the canal and the Saracen's tower and enter the town through the massive archway. It's full of shops and cafes, but easy to visualise what it was like 800 years ago. You can walk right around the town along the ramparts and there are some fine views.
