19th Century House with Pool in the Provence Drôme
Dieulefit, an hour from Avignon
5 bedrooms, sleeps 8 people

La Fayence

The house is just on the outskirts of the village of Dieulefit, tucked against a hill, which has caves with underground springs. It faces south with views towards the hills that surround the village and has a large garden with several terraces and a lawn shaded by ancient trees. Dieulefit is famous for its potteries and art galleries, the charm of its old houses in the rue du Bourg, the quais du Jabron and the medieval quarter, la Viale, and for its peaceful way of life and gentle climate.

The ground floor of the house has two bedrooms, a double and a twin with a bathroom with shower.

The village has all essential shops including a supermarket and a market on Friday mornings and throughout the year, there are often pottery, wool and country antiques markets in the Promenades or the rue du Bourg. Nyons (25 kms) has a market every Thursday mornings and other villages also have markets on different days of the week. There is a greater selection of shops and restaurants in Montélimar 27 kms away.

The main floor has a fully equipped kitchen, which includes a dishwasher and washing machine, an oven and hob and a microwave and fridge. There is a salon with a fireplace and a piano, a dining room and a bathroom with bath. There is a large second terrace, tiled and equipped with table and chairs for outside eating.

The first floor has a double bedroom with corner washing facilities, which opens onto a terrace and there is a another bedroom with two single beds.

The attic has been restored into a double bedroom with a cot and corner washing facilities.

A separate studio doubles both as storage space for bicycles and gardening tools and also has a further bedroom, which opens straight onto the garden, with a double bed and a mezzanine, ideal for older children.

The house has television and video, a hi-fi and a telephone.

An outside terrace with automatic gates has parking space for two cars and there is another private entrance at the bottom of the garden that has parking space for two more cars.

The swimming pool has automatic filtration and there are sunloungers and hammocks. There is also a play area for the children and table tennis as well as bicycles.

The Area

Close by is a club with golfing facilities and a health centre, village tennis courts a short walk away and an Olympic size swimming pool. There are also several riding stables in the area, which have riding schools, as well as horses and ponies to suit all levels of experience, which can be hired for an hour or two, or for the day.

You can hire bicycles in Dieulefit and there are numerous routes to explore both in the hills around here, through the Sarou forest or the Vercors and through the Drôme itself.

Other villages worth seeing are Le Poët-Laval (4 kms), Châteauneuf de Mazenc and Taulignan (both about 15 kms) and Grignan (20 kms), prettily perched on a hill with a magnificent 17th century château, where the 17th century letter writer Mme de Sévigné, famous for wittily describing her life and times, lived and died. Her tomb is in the church there. The lovely city of Orange, Roman Vaison-la-Romaine and the treasures of Avignon are an hour's drive away and will certainly need at least a day to see.

During the summer there are concerts regularly held in the churches at Dieulefit and Poët-Laval or at the château in Grignan. Other concerts are held in Orange, choral ones in Vaison and piano recitals in La Roque d'Anthéron.
