Villa at Aix-en-Provence in the South of France
Bibemus, 15 minutes from the centre of Aix
3 bedrooms, sleeps 4/5 people

La Villa le Pin

This typical Provençal villa was built about a hundred years ago and has since been enlarged into a comfortable, pleasant house in the hills just outside Aix-en-Provence at Bibemus. It has a peaceful Mediterranean garden with shady trees and is quite private from neighbouring villas. Most shops, including a bakery, butcher and a supermarket are a short walk away and the centre of Aix is only a 15 minute walk from here.

The villa is close to the foothills of the Sainte Victoire Mountains, a part of the region that inspired and was much loved by Cézanne. His realisation that the intense sunlight here could only be reproduced through the use of a range colours was to be of great importance in the development of painting away from Impressionism towards a freer, richer form of expression shared by Monet, Van Gogh, Renoir and Matisse. The beaches along the Mediterranean coast and the pretty Luberon villages to the north are little over a thirty minute drive.

The house has a large, light open plan living room and dining area on the ground floor with windows opening onto the garden and a well equipped corner kitchen that includes an oven and hob, dishwasher, fridge/freezer and microwave with a washing machine in the utility room next door. There is a double bedroom that also has windows opening into the garden and a bathroom with shower.

Upstairs is a very large double bedroom with two terraces and lovely views over the hills, and a single bedroom. Also a bathroom with bath, washbasin and wc.

The garden has lots of trees and a fine view of Aix to one side. There is outside furniture and table tennis and some lovely walks, particularly in the evenings, direct from the villa. Five minutes away is an open air swimming pool and within 15 minutes is a golf course, tennis court and riding stables.

The Area

An ancient spa founded by the Romans, Aix is a lively university town and focus for the arts, and remains a relaxed, friendly place. The classically elegant centre has hardly changed at all and the evening stroll in the Place du Général de Gaulle and the Cours Mirabeau is a great meeting place for everyone. The Cours and the area around it as far as the Fontaine des Quatre Dauphins has beautiful 17th century town houses and avenues of plane trees, shops, banks and cafés. To the north of Cours, the old part of town is a delightful and endlessly surprising maze of streets. Look for the little 18th century Place d'Albertas and the Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville, where there is a wonderful flower market.

The pretty little port of Cassis on the coast near Marseille also produces one of the best white wines in Provence, if you get a chance to go there; delicious with fish and refreshing just by itself. Saintes Maries-de-la-Mer in the Camargue has some good seafood restaurants. Saint Rémy-de-Provence in the Alpilles hills, known for its fruit, vegetable and flower markets and a favourite haunt of van Gogh, also has some excellent restaurants.

Less than an hour from here are some of the lovely Luberon villages, Gordes, Roussillon, Loumarin and its Renaissance château or Bonnieux clinging to the rock high above the Cavalon valley and Lacoste where you can visit the château that once belonged to the Marquis de Sade's family.
