Village House Apartment with garden in Southern France
In the centre of Uzès in the Provence Gard
1 bedroom and a mezzanine, sleeps 4/5 people

L'Appartement

This ancient traditional town house is close to the Place aux Herbes right in the centre of Uzès, facing onto the circular boulevard Gambetta, which marks the place where the medieval city walls used to be and where the market takes place every Wednesday and Saturday morning. The garden behind the house is fresh with the scent of greenery, quiet and private. Nîmes is 25 kms, Avignon 30 kms.

Uzès sits on a plateau above the Alzon valley, its three towers rising against the sky line, and the first impression you get as you approach through the garrigue in a shimmering haze, is that it is reminiscent of parts of Italy. The Ducal palace has a range of architectural styles dating from the 12th to 15th centuries and a richly decorated Renaissance facade and from the top of the 11th century Tour Bermonde, you can see for miles. But its main charm lies in the streets and houses and the sleepy, shady square and fountain. Within a short walk of the apartment are four boulangeries, two grocers, a butcher, three banks and a café.

Light and well furnished, the apartment is on the second floor of the house and overlooks the boulevard on one side and the garden on the other. There is a living room with books and television and a kitchen equipped with fridge/freezer, microwave and hot plate, washing machine and ironing facilities.

There is a double bedroom, twin beds on the mezzanine and a bathroom with bath, wash basin and wc. An extra spare bed can be provided if needed.

There is also private parking and a part of the garden equipped with outside table and chairs, a fridge and a barbecue is reserved exclusively for our guests.

The Area

Uzès has a succession of fetes and festivals throughout the year; concerts, theatre, country antiques markets. There is a swimming pool and tennis courts open to anyone, a 9-hole golf course and riding stables, which cater for all levels of experience and who organise long or short treks around the countryside. The aquatic park in Bouscarasse, 8 kms from Uzès is in a marvellous setting and is open from June until September. There are also numerous peaceful places along the Gardon river for picnics or a day's fishing.

The villages around here like Saint Quentin-la-Poterie, Aigaliers and Arpaillergues or Saint-Victor-des-Oules, each have their own special charm and individual histories. In tiny medieval Sauve, the townsfolk have been making three-pronged wooden forks from lotus trees since the 11th century. In 40 minutes you can be amongst the vines in the Vaucluse or the beaches on the Mediterranean coast.
