Peaceful Rural Cottage Near Beaches and Golf Courses
Between Missillac and La Roche-Bernard on the Southern Brittany border
3 bedrooms, sleeping up to 6 people
Our cottage is in a small hamlet, which nestles down a quiet lane in beautiful countryside close to the border between Southern Brittany and the Western Loire. It is 5 minutes drive from the beautiful 'Ville Gastronomique' of La Roche-Bernard with its picturesque river location and 5 minutes from the excellent Golf Course and Chateau at Missillac (La Bretesche). An ideal base for those who want a peaceful holiday in tranquil surroundings near beaches and also for those looking for a golfing break. The stunning International golf course at La Baule and another at Savenay, are both within a short drive. There are also lovely beaches about 20 minutes away at Penestin and at the fashionable, lively resort at La Baule with its superb nine kilometre long sandy beach, 30 minutes from the house.
The narrow streets of La Roche-Bernard tumble down to the river and the village has a choice of shops and a number of good restaurants around a series of little squares, including the Auberge Bretonne, which has the reputation of being one of the best restaurants in this part of France. Market day is Thursday and there is a wonderful Sunday morning market in Penestin with stalls ranging from fresh local produce to pottery.
The cottage has a cheerful main room with a dining area, sofas and chairs and a wood burning stove, television, DVD and a hi-fi. The kitchen is equipped with a gas cooker, fridge and microwave, coffee maker, toaster and kettle. There are also ironing facilities, a hairdryer and some books and games.
There are three bedrooms, two double and one twin and a bathroom with shower. A cot is available on request.
The garden is large with parking space at the front and has a patio area with a picnic bench, table and chairs and a brick built barbecue and equipment. There is also a gazebo to provide shade during the height of the summer, a boules area and bicycles are available.
The golf course at La Bretesche is in Missillac, a 5 minute drive from our cottage. Situated amongst glorious woodland and with a dramatic 15th century chateau with a lake as a backdrop, it is hard to imagine a more perfect setting for a round of golf. Booking is advisable here at popular times of the year, so why not ask us to do it for you before you arrive?
The International course at La Baule, which is less than 30 minutes from the cottage, is set amongst chestnut and oak woods. It offers two attractive and fairly challenging 18-hole courses (The Lucien Barriere course at 6055 metres and The Dianne Barriere-Desseigne at 6301 metres) both of which are par 72, plus a 9-hole course at 2961 metres par 36.
Why not get to grips with your golf game and practice your swing at the training centre designed by Jack Nicklaus? Green Fees at the Lucien Barriere Golf Course for a single round, range from 40 euros to 62 euros, depending on the time of year with discounts offered when multiple rounds are booked. You should book your teeing off times 24 hours in advance.
Savenay, 20 minutes from the cottage, hosts another great course. The 6340 metre, par 70 course, is situated on the Sillon de Bretagne, overlooking the Loire river. It is a high quality course running along open valleys and through chestnut woodland with lakes. There is also a shop and restaurant.
Whatever your interests, from walking and cycling to sailing, from playing golf to relaxing on one of the glorious sandy beaches, we have it all. Maybe your ideal day might start with a visit to one of the markets, followed by a relaxing afternoon on the beach and ending with a sumptuous fruits-de-mer at an intimate local restaurant.
You will hopefully find something to appeal to children of all ages in the area. There are good aquariums at Vannes and at Le Croisic. The one at Le Croisic features a walk through perspex tunnel. Or visit the L'Espadon (Swordfish), the first submarine to sail beneath the North-Pole, now permanently located at St Nazaire, where guided tours are provided. There are also several Wildlife Parks. Head towards Questembert where you will find Branféré, a lovely park where the animals roam free. Alternatively, there is a more conventional safari park at Planète Sauvage, between Nantes and Pornic. Both parks are well managed and a far cry from the old-fashioned zoo's. Canoeing is available on the river at La Roche-Bernard, and lessons can be arranged there if required.
