Romantic Chateau Bed and Breakfast in the Western Loire
Feneu, near Angers in Anjou, Maine et Loire
2 en suite double bedrooms
Le Château de Montriou
Montriou has been in our family for more than three hundred years and is situated in the village of Feneu, 17 km north of Angers in the Pays de la Loire region of Western France. The chateau dates from the 12th century and was added to over a period of time. The 15th century chapel is classified as a historical monument. Over the past few years we have continued the restoration and modernisation of the chateau. We are also passionate gardeners and have enlarged the park and created a series of lovely gardens. We have here, two guest bedrooms with bathrooms and salons with beautiful painted ceilings, and we hope to be able to welcome you into our home to enjoy the gardens and the area, places along the River Loire and the vineyards.
The chateau lies in the fold of a valley with elegant, pure lines, at the foot of which, is a lake and enormous plane trees. Beside the chapel is a formal topiary garden. The little bridge over the stream takes you into the park towards a giant sequoia tree and then to the vegetable garden, surrounded by ancient walls and full of flowers and vegetables, scents and colour. We have added the 'Garden of the Princess' here, which has parterre flower beds and a bower of marrow and squash. This follows through to the last garden, which has a collection of ornamental gourds. There is also an Italian garden and an 'Enchanted' wood.
The guest rooms have been decorated and furnished in the style of the chateau with period family furniture, canopied beds, pictures and private bathrooms. Breakfast is served in the dining room. La Chambre des Deux Oncles is a double room with views towards the lake. La Chambre Jaune is a double room overlooking the chapel and topiary garden. For visits of a week or more, we have a suite of two rooms, Chambre aux Abeilles and Chambre aux Ornements, which has bathroom and a kitchenette. Both rooms have splendid views of the park and gardens.
The Area
The Anjou Golf Country Club is 6 km from the chateau and there are others within 25 minutes. The chateau is only 17 km from Angers. The castle looms up on the horizon long before you reach the town. It has seventeen bastion towers and massive inner and outer defence walls, though now there are gardens in the moat and a herd of fallow deer. Many works of art and a unique collection of tapestries are displayed there. You can head into a network of cobbled streets towards the cathedral from the entrance of the castle. Rue St Aignan and Rue Donadieu de Puycharic in particular, have some fine medieval and Renaissance houses. From the cathedral, Place Freppel and Place Ste Croix, two delightful adjoining squares, take you through to the main shopping area. Rue St Laud is now a pedestrian street packed with shops and restaurants with tables spilling onto the street. La Ferme, in Place Freppel, is a popular restaurant with plenty of dishes incorporating Anjou wine. Visiting the Savennieres and Coteau du Layon vineyards to taste the wines make a good day out and one of the most famous liqueurs, Cointreau, is made in Angers. The countryside around the chateau is green and wooded, crossed by rivers and dotted with chateaux with some wonderful walks. Beauty and silence are master here. This is traditionally great horse country and Saumur is home of the famous Cadre Noire riding school. The museum there traces the history of the cavalry and you can often watch the riders and horses in training for one of their spectacular displays. The great chateau and a visit to the wine houses in and around Saumur are also worth a detour. Travel Information
