Traditional Cottage in Burgundy
Champallement, between Vézelay and Nevers, in the Nièvre
1 bedroom, ideal for 1 or 2 people

La Maison Machecourt

Our country cottage is part of the Château de Champallement estate in the little village of Champallement in the heart of the Nièvre area of Burgundy and has stunning views across to the Morvan Hills. The main square of the village has centuries old trees and lawns, surrounded by the 11th century church of St Eustache, the Mairie and four or five houses.

Shops are between 5 and 10 minutes from here, a greater selection of shops and supermarkets are at Corbigny, 15 km away and there are dozens of village markets to choose from in between. Vézelay, the mystic centre of Burgundy is 44 km from here. Nevers, close to the Formula 1 racing circuit at Magny-Cours, is 55 kms. The Tannay vineyards are 15 minutes drive and an opportunity to sample the wine. Sancerre, Pouilly, Irancy and Chablis are 15 minutes to an hour.

The cottage has recently been restored in keeping with its original character and has a main room with a kitchen and dining area and a sitting room area, on the ground floor. There is a brand new cooking range and the original stone sink has been kept and made into a feature. A country dining table and chairs, sofa and an oak armoire in which plates, glasses and utensils are kept, harmonise with the traditional style of the cottage. There is also a gas cooker, washing machine, fridge and kettle.

The bedroom has a new painted wrought iron double bed, the original washbasin and prayer stool has been kept and there is a chair and wardrobe with shelves. The bathroom has a zinc bath with an antique style shower.

The Area

Champallement has a small lake stocked with fish, there are riding stables 6 km from the village and two larger lakes good for windsurfing and swimming with a sail boat and canoe base, 12 and 17 km away. Bicycles are available at the château. During the summer local villages organise country antiques fairs and fetes. Champallement holds its own fete on the first weekend of July and another on the 14th of July with a feast in the village square, dancing and fireworks.

Vézelay has long attracted a teaming mix of artists and mystics who would be equally at home in Siena. The basilica, has been for centuries and is now, a focal point for visitors from all over the world and the town is full of esoteric bookshops and restaurants that cater for all tastes.

Nevers lies beside the upper reaches of the Loire river and has been famous since the 16th century for its colourful pottery. The art has been handed down from generation to generation and the families still make plates, tureens and bowls in their own original imaginative designs, which you can buy from shops in the pottery district of the town. Many of the pieces feature a blue wavy background inspired by the river, though 17th century Italian and Chinese influences were often whimsically borrowed. The town also has good shops and restaurants and for those with a sweet tooth, lots of hand made chocolate and sweet shops.

Downstream from Nevers is Charité-sur-Loire, a delightful town which looks much as it did in medieval times. Pouilly sur Loire, famous for its dry white wine, is further along from Charité. The small vineyards slope down to the water's edge and you can try several different wines in the village, best sampled with lunch. On the other side of the river is Sancerre and although equally famous for its white wines, the reds are worth trying too.
