Modern Paris Apartment near the Eiffel Tower
In the 15th Arrondissement, between the Seine and Montparnasse
2 bedrooms, sleeps up to 4 people
La Résidence
Our apartment is on the 7th floor of a modern apartment building with a lift, about 5 minutes walk from the Parc du Champ du Mars, at the end of which is the Eiffel Tower and the River Seine. This is a lively area, full of restaurants, shops and delicatessens, which stay open late. There are smart food shops in the rue Cler and one of Paris' prettiest street markets on the avenue de Saxe, or drop into the bistro Thoumieux at 79 rue St Dominique for lunch and a taste of real Paris. The apartment is within easy reach of the Champs Elysees and the Opera, Montparnasse and the Bastille, the Latin Quarter, the Louvre, Notre Dame, Saint Germain des Prés and the Jardin du Luxembourg. In short, most of the centre of Paris. Many of these places are within walking distance, others are two or three stops away on the metro via the three local stations: Duplex, La Motte-Piquet Grenelle and Emile Zola.
The building has a resident caretaker and an entrance access code. The apartment is stylishly furnished, full of books and pictures and equipped with every comfort. The entrance leads straight into the sitting room, furnished with a sofa and chairs, television, a wall of bookcases and modern lithographs. There is also a dining area. The kitchen is well designed in white, toned with red granite work surfaces and equipped with all modern necessities, including a dishwasher and washing machine, oven and hob, microwave, a fridge/freezer and various appliances such as, coffee makers, toaster, kettle, mixer and juicer.
The main bedroom has a double bed, cupboards (with space for luggage), a period chest of drawers and chairs. The second bedroom has a double bed, which can be made into two single beds and an antique armoire. The bathrooms, one with a shower, the other with a bath, have been designed in a combination of marble effect vanity units and mirrors. There is also a hairdryer. The Eiffel tower, illuminated with a thousand lights for five minutes every hour, can be seen from the balcony, which runs the length of the sitting room, kitchen and the main bedroom and overlooks the gardens. Information and maps of Paris and other places beyond are provided.
The Area
There is a sports club with a gymnasium near to the apartment, four swimming pools and a tennis court and squash court in the area, for those who like to keep in shape. The Musée d'Orsay is not far away and has an amazing art collection, which includes masterpieces by Manet, Degas, Gauguin, Cézanne and Renoir amongst others. Going west from there, opposite the place de la Concorde, is the Assemblée Nationale, the lower house of parliament. Beyond it, an esplanade leads to the golden domed Invalides and the Eglise du Dôme, built by Louis XIV, which houses Napoleon's tomb. Just beside it is the Musèe Rodin in the charming 18th century Hôtel Biron with its romantic gardens. The Louvre would need at least a month to visit and see all its treasures. The elegant Faubourg St Germain is home to some of the city's oldest and grandest families and the residence of the Prime Minister. Bon Marché, Paris' oldest department store, is in the rue du Bac. Across boulevard St Germain is the Carré Rive Gauche, a warren of streets lined with antiques shops to drool over. The Jardins du Luxembourg is the quintessential Paris park. The gardens are partly formal with laid out terraces and paths and partly less formal with lawns and mature trees, scattered with sculpture. There are orchards with three hundred varieties of apples and pears and an apiary, where you can take a course in bee keeping. On any day, the park is full of joggers and cyclists, chess players, children riding ponies or playing in sandpits and sailing boats on the pond and people sitting in the sun and strolling around. In the early 1900's Montparnasse was home to Picasso, Chagall and Soutine and later, Henry Miller, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein and Man Ray. Today, the boulevard du Montparnasse is still full of night life. At No 102 is La Coupole, the huge art-deco brasserie and opposite, is Le Select, the classic late night café, which rarely sleeps. Further along, the literary café, La Closerie des Lilas, was a favourite with everyone from Hemingway to Lenin. The boulevard Edgar-Quinet has pleasant cafés and a market on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. Other places, outside of Paris worth visiting are Versailles, Chantilly ( the racecourse, splendid chateau and stables) and Auvers-sur-Oise, where van Gogh lived and worked for several years, both just north of Paris, or Fontainebleau and Barbizon, to the south of the city, Disneyland Paris and Giverny, where Monet lived.
