Chateau Chambres d'Hotes Bed and Breakfast in Burgundy
Champallement, between Vézelay and Nevers, in the Nièvre
6 en suite double rooms
Château de Champallement
Château de Champallement, once owned by the family of Madame de Montespan, mistress of Louis XIV, is in the little village of Champallement in the heart of the Nièvre area of Burgundy and has stunning views across to the Morvan Hills. The main square in the village has centuries old trees and lawns, surrounded by the 11th century church of St Eustache, the mairie and four or five houses. Vézelay, the mystic centre of Burgundy is 44 km from here. Nevers, close to the Formula 1 racing circuit at Magny-Cours, is 45 kms. The Tannay vineyards are 15 minutes drive and an opportunity to sample the wine. Sancerre, Pouilly, Irancy and Chablis are 15 minutes to an hour.
We have six bed and breakfast rooms, all furnished with period family furniture and two guest salons. There is also a kitchen for those who wish to make light lunches, snacks or children's meals.
There are two bedrooms on the first floor, both with tiled floors and wood ceilings: La Chambre Namur is a twin room with bedside tables and an armoire, chairs and a writing table with an en suite shower room and fine views of the Morvans. La Chambre Bruges is a twin room with a large shower room, an armoire, bedside tables and a coffer. The three other bedrooms are on the second floor, these with wood floors and beams: La Chambre Rose is a twin room with a cot, a wardrobe, a writing table and an armchair. La Chambre Bleue has a double bed, bedside table, shelves and an armoire and chairs. These two rooms share a bathroom with shower. Ideal for a family or friends travelling together. La Chambre Jaune has a double bed and an en suite shower room, a chest of drawer, wardrobe and a table and chairs. A hairdryer and cot is available on request. Tristan and Iseult is a double bedroom in a tower dating back to the XIVth century that has a small private garden and wonderful views over the Morvan national park to the east. The room has the original ceiling with huge oak beams, creating an atmosphere of times past, combined with modern comforts. The en-suite shower area also offers the same magnificent views. For a small supplement, guests may also reserve exclusive use of the private library located in the tower, which has a wood burning stove and shelves filled with a collection of fascinating books in a range of languages. Art Courses: The courses in September are given by Esther de Patoul of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, using food and paper as principal elements, working with different techniques; pigments, ink, charcoal, juice, peelings, folding, collages, leaking, prints, tracing. Prices include five nights bed and breakfast, six meals, picnic on Wednesday lunchtime, drinks during the meals included, art classes. Groups or individuals welcome. Please enquire for details. Weekend Concerts: The informal weekend concerts at the end of June, beginning of July, have a programme that includes an anthology of classical music, folk music and songs. Musicians are welcome to bring their instruments and join in. Concerts, dinner, bed and breakfast included. Groups or individuals welcome. Please enquire for details.
The Area
Champallement has a small lake stocked with fish, there are riding stables 3 km from the village and two larger lakes good for windsurfing and swimming with a sail boat and canoe base, 12 and 17 km away. Bicycles are available at the château. During the summer local villages organise country antiques fairs and fetes. Champallement holds its own fete on the first weekend of July and another on the 14th of July with a feast in the village square, dancing and fireworks. Nevers lies beside the upper reaches of the Loire river and has been famous since the 16th century for its colourful pottery. The art has been handed down from generation to generation and the families still make plates, tureens and bowls in their own original imaginative designs, which you can buy from shops in the pottery district of the town. Many of the pieces feature a blue wavy background inspired by the river, though 17th century Italian and Chinese influences were often whimsically borrowed. The town also has good shops and restaurants and for those with a sweet tooth, lots of hand made chocolate and sweet shops. Downstream from Nevers is Charité-sur-Loire, a delightful town which looks much as it did in medieval times. Pouilly sur Loire, famous for its dry white wine, is further along from Charité. The small vineyards slope down to the water's edge and you can try several different wines in the village, best sampled with lunch. On the other side of the river is Sancerre and although equally famous for its white wines, the reds are worth trying too. Vézelay has long attracted a teaming mix of artists and mystics who would be equally at home in Siena. The basilica, has been for centuries and is now, a focal point for visitors from all over the world and the town is full of esoteric bookshops and restaurants that cater for all tastes.
