L’Echallier
Our house is in a small hamlet on the cliffs overlooking the Gironde estuary about 25 minutes from the historic town of Saintes, colourful Talmont and Royan and the beaches around it, on the Atlantic coast. Beautiful La Rochelle further along the coast and the Bordeaux Médoc vineyard area across the estuary, are both about 45 minutes from here.
The nearest beach is a 20 minute drive away and there are miles of sandy beaches and lovely little bays to be found along the Atlantic coast. The beaches at St Georges de Didonne and Royan (next to each other) are both excellent spots for sailing, wind surfing and para sailing, jet skiing and sand sailing. Many of the beaches have children's clubs with lots to keep the kids amused during the day. Originally, a simple country cottage, the size of the house has been more than doubled by its architect owner and has both a traditional and contemporary feel. Furnishings are a mixture of country comfort and elegance with paintings brightening the walls. Entertaining is easy with a covered terrace dining area with a barbecue and a large dining room in the house.
The living room has a fireplace and the kitchen is fully equipped to include a dishwasher and washing machine, oven and hob, microwave and fridge, plus coffee maker, toaster and kettle. A hairdryer is provided and there is television. There are two main bedrooms, one with a terrace, each with adjoining bathrooms and two smaller bedrooms, which share a bathroom and wc. There is also another wc with wash basin. The garden and pool are all yours to enjoy. This is a very lovely wine growing area, undiscovered and unspoiled, where life continues in much the same way as it has always done (a great plus). There are markets in Sainte six days a week and local shops and other markets in the villages around. This is great oyster and mussel country, so these figure on most menus, together with more traditional dishes.
The Area
Royan and Sainte have two very different golf courses, each challenging in their own way. Both have excellent club house facilities including pro shops. It is advisable to book, especially in summer. There is a wonderful zoo at La Palmyre, close to Royan, which is worth a visit to see the parrot house alone. A short ferry ride across the Gironde, (or you can drive), takes you to the Bordeaux Medoc vineyards, where one can visit those such as La Tour and Lafitte. Blaye and the village and vineyards of St Emilion are also within reasonable driving distance for a day out. Travel Information
