Peaceful Country Cottage in South West France
Mandacou, 20 km from Bergerac in the Dordogne
3 bedrooms, sleeps 4/7 people. With pool.
Le Gros Buisson
The house is on the edge of Mandacou within easy walking distance of the village and the local bar restaurant. The situation is ideal if all you want is to relax and read a good novel and simply laze around the pool, or if you enjoy cycling and walking, a game of golf or a day's fishing. This part of Southwest France is beautiful, a mass of wild flowers and blossom in Spring, lush walnut groves and the pure oxygen of vast forests with long hot summer days stretching into Autumn. The Dordogne river is close at hand for boat trips and canoeing.
The little medieval village of Issigeac is 5 km from here and has a variety of shops and an especially good Sunday morning market, packed with every imaginable seasonal thing from foie gras and farm made cheeses to kilos of apricots and cherries, a dozen different kinds of lettuce, home baked cakes, tarts and wine, to garden plants and wicker baskets. It is quite a social occasion, when people come in from miles around as much to meet friends as to shop, to sit together in a cafe and catch up with news, or perhaps have lunch at the restaurant across from the old château. The old bastide town of Castillonnes is 7 km South of Mandacou. Bergerac airport is 15 minutes from here. Le Gros Buisson is a renovated farmhouse with beamed ceilings and terracotta tiled floors with a wood burning stove. There is ample space for relaxing quietly, partying and barbecuing. If the sun gets too hot outside, you can retreat into the coolness of the house. The ground floor has a large lounge and dining area, a kitchen and a separate double bedroom. There is also a shower room and separate toilet. The kitchen is equipped with a dishwasher, fridge, freezer, an oven and hob, microwave and has plenty of cutlery, glasses and crockery.
Upstairs is a bedroom with three single beds, wood floors, a beamed ceiling and a separate wc with wash basin on the landing. The master bedroom has an en suite bathroom with bath and shower. The furniture is a mixture of old and modern. The main room downstairs opens onto a terrace near the swimming pool with table and chairs and sunbeds. There are bicycles, a small snooker table and a variety of games, television and a hi-fi with CD player.
The Area
The châteaux lined meandering Dordogne river valley has several canoe bases, where you can leave your car and take off along the river for as long as you like, to a point where you can be picked up and driven back to the car. The medieval bastide town of Monpazier has excellent shopping, stunning architecture, cafes and good restaurants. This romantic village, often used as a film location, has a rare cèpe and truffle market between June and September. Beaumont with its ancient ramparts and hidden walkways is a vibrant, living village. There are antiques and arts and crafts fairs all through the summer. The famous Quincaillerie de Bariats (ironmongers) is a labyrinth of intriguing items and a must to visit. The bastide of Villeréal has a superb Saturday market, summer festivals and fairs, pottery, antiques and country horse races. The beautiful town of Bergerac, the centre for wine produced in the vineyards that surround it, has a wine museum and ‘maison de vins’ wine tastings. A choice of very good restaurants, free music concerts and exhibitions, a fabulous 14th of July firework display and a féte de music in June, are just a taste of what this old riverside town has to offer.
