Chambres d'Hotes Bed and Breakfast in the Loire Valley
Manthelan, near Loches, 30 km from Tours
2 en suite double rooms and 2 family suites. Dinner available on request.
Le Vieux Tilleul
Le Vieux Tilleul is in the centre of Manthelan, a small country village, 30 minutes from Tours, within an easy drive of some of the great châteaux of the Loire Valley. Our large, rambling house has an inner courtyard with an old lime tree that gives the house its name and a peaceful garden to relax in. Manthelan has a choice of shops, a bar and a restaurant. Loches is 15 km from here, a cheerful market town with several very good restaurants and a twice weekly market full of local produce, cheeses and Touraine wines. The medieval part of the town sits on the hill above and has lovely ornate Renaissance houses leading towards the castle.
We have two double rooms with bathrooms and two suites with shower rooms, suitable for a family or friends travelling together. All the rooms are warmly decorated and comfortable, furnished with family furniture and have carefully chosen pictures on the walls. Hairdryers are available. We also have a small cottage at the bottom of the garden with its own entrance for those who prefer to be more independent, which has a double room and bathroom, a small sitting room and a private garden.
The house has a library sitting room to relax in and a dining room, both with fireplaces to cheer up winter evenings. Breakfast is served either in the dining room or out on the terrace on fine days. Dinner is available on request. The stables have been turned into a large reception room for special celebrations or dinner for a group of family and friends. Weekend painting and cooking courses are available, please enquire for details.
The Area
Amboise is dominated by its château, one of the oldest and most beautiful in the valley and the town has very good food shops and restaurants. Leonardo da Vinci spent the last three years of his life near here and his house in Clos-Lucé is now a museum dedicated to his life and work. Azay-le-Rideau is a Renaissance château of great charm and elegance but Chenonceaux is perhaps one of the most beautiful. The International Festival of Parks and Gardens is held at the château of Chaumont-sur-Loire from June until October. Villandry, Valmer, Bouges and the priory of Saint-Cosme, are also as famous for their gardens as for their châteaux. For those who prefer something different, there are several excellent golf courses within reasonable driving distance. Bicycles can be hired locally. An hour from here is Futuroscope, the huge science and technology park just outside Poitiers, which is fun for both children and adults. While this part of the Loire is famous for its exquisite châteaux, it is also famous for its food and produces some excellent wines, including Vouvray, a sparkling white wine as good as any champagne. Cravant les Côteaux is a small wine producing village near Chinon, where you can sample and buy directly from the vineyards. Bourgueil is another wine to look for and there are other vineyards all along the River Cher. We will be happy to recommend and advise on anything you want to know. Travel Information
