Traditional Provençal House in the South of France
Maussane, near Saint Rémy de Provence in the Bouches du Rhône
4 bedrooms with bathrooms, sleeping up to 8 people. With pool.

Le Mas de la Cigale

Our house is quietly situated in Maussane, a typical Provencal village in the heart of the Alpilles hills, 15 minutes from Saint Rémy de Provence, between Avignon and Arles. Accessed via a private lane and surrounded by a garden, the house is within walking distance of shops and restaurants in the village or for a coffee or a pastis under the plane trees in the lovely Place de l'Eglise. The golden olive oil Maussane makes, is deliciously fruity and has an appellation contrôlée. You can get it anywhere in the village.

There are a number of local vineyards around Maussane, which produce red, white and rosé wines. Châteauneuf du Pape and Gigondas are some of the better known wines and out of all the rosé wines there are to choose from, Tavel is considered to be the best. The wines around Aix en Provence and the white wines from Cassis are also worth looking for.

We have recently completely refurbished the house, keeping its traditional character outside and making the interior light and contemporary. There is a large, fully equipped kitchen, which would satisfy any cook with a big fridge/freezer, a self-cleaning oven and a five plate hob, microwave and dishwasher, plus various things like a toaster and an espresso coffee machine. The table is large enough to seat ten people. The utility room has temperature controlled wine storage and a washing machine, dryer and ironing facilities.

The salon is also large, air-conditioned with an 18th century fireplace and a piano, television and DVD, home cinema and music system, Broadband Internet connection and a computer with Webcam.

The downstairs double bedroom has television, an en suite bathroom and a corner dressing area with a mini fridge and tea and coffee making facilities. All these rooms open onto the large terrace overlooking the garden, equipped with a teak dining table and chairs and a smaller wrought iron table and chairs outside the bedroom.

Upstairs are three further bedrooms, one of which is air-conditioned, has television and a bathroom with both bath and shower. The other two rooms have shower rooms. A hairdryer is provided.

A fountain plays in the garden and beyond, is the salt water pool, a pool house with an outside shower and terraces with comfortable sunbeds under the cherry and fig trees. There is parking for 3 or 4 cars under the trees or in the garage.

Local restaurants include Le Margaux or Le Ravi Provencau in Maussane (both old favourites) and the area has several others within reasonable driving distance; the Bistrot du Paradou and La Petite France in Le Paradou, or Le Cabre d'Or and the Beau Manoir at Les Baux. In Eygalieres, try the Bistrot Eygalieres or Le Petit Bru.

The Area

There is something for the whole family in this part of Provence. There are riding stables, which can organise treks into the Alpilles hills, village tennis courts, cycling, gliding, a 9-hole golf course 5 minutes from here and an 18-hole golf course in Mouriès, 15 minutes away. The beaches at Salins de Giraud or Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (which also has excellent seafood restaurants) are about a 45 minute drive.

St Rémy is an attractive little town with shops ranging from fashion shops to artisan shops and art galleries with restaurants and a way of life that is pleasantly relaxed. Van Gogh loved this area and spent the last years of his life here. You can go to many of the places where he painted some of his best known work and see them, much as he would have seen them then.

Avignon (20 km) is a beautiful university town with much to see, the vast Palais des Papes in particular, which has smart shops, markets, numerous restaurant and cafes and a huge music and theatre festival in July, amongst a succession of other events throughout the year. Ancient Arles and its associations with the painter Vincent van Gogh, inspired the designer Christian Lacroix in many of his creations.
