La Rouquette
La Rouquette is a large fortified house dating from the 16th to 18th centuries, set on a plateau with splendid panoramic views, near the delightful medieval hilltop village of Penne d'Agenais. Our house is set in fifty acres of park and woodland, where children can let off steam and freely explore, accessed via a private drive of just over a kilometre. As you enter the interior courtyard, you will see the different styles of architecture that have evolved over the centuries from the Renaissance to the present day. The house has been in our family for several generations and is very much a home, furnished with family furniture and period pieces; a place where family and friends can relax together in comfort.
Dausse is a village about 4 km from here, which has a small supermarket that carries most essential things, a garage and restaurants, amongst other facilities. You can find farmers markets on almost every day of the week within a reasonable drive, notably at Port de Penne on Sunday mornings and a larger one in Libos on Thursday mornings. Villeneuve sur Lot is a relaxed market town beside the River Lot, which has a huge choice of shops, cafés, restaurants to suit all tastes and two hypermarkets on the outskirts. There are numerous restaurants to choose from, including the Aubergade in Puymirol (30 km), which has two Michelin stars, owned by the celebrated chef Michel Trama and worth at least one visit while you are here (early booking is essential). The ground floor of the house has two salons side by side, a dining room with a vaulted ceiling, a games room, a gym and a traditional kitchen, fully equipped with everything needed including, two fridges, a cooker and microwave, dishwasher, washing machine and dryer, plus coffee machine, kettle, and toaster. There is a double bedroom with an en suite shower room and a separate jacuzzi and guest wc.
A winding stone staircase leads to the first floor and a large double bedroom with a four poster bed, fireplace and a bathroom. The third double room also has a four poster bed and bathroom. On the second floor, is a very large room, suitable as a play room or dormitory for children. We have 6 single beds and, 3 cots for up to three years of age, available on request. This in turn leads to a 'secret' bedroom via wood steps. This room has a shower room and is particularly suitable for young people. The sixth double room with bathroom is above the kitchen, next to the gym (exercise bicycle, rowing machine, weights...), which also has table tennis. The swimming pool is some distance from the house, terraced and equipped with sunbeds, and the grounds are full of secluded spots and yours to enjoy. A guardian lives in a separate part of the house and is on hand to tend the pool and garden.
The Area
You can buy plums and melons, delicious peaches and cherries, or fat tomatoes, farm cheeses, pâtés and foie gras in the local markets, or straight from many of the farms you pass, while driving around. There is a huge variety of flora and fauna and, depending on the time of the year, you could spot deer, red squirrels, badgers and countless birds, geckos basking in the sun, and swallowtails and fritillaries fluttering by; you may even hear a nightingale. The fields are carpeted with many species of wild flowers including orchids, which makes walking an absolute joy. Penne d’Agenais has a warren of tiny, steep lanes leading up to the basilica, lined with immaculate stone and brick houses. It has several restaurants; the L’Air du Temps in particular, has a good reputation. Tournon d’Agenais is another hilltop bastide village with marvellous views and a pretty central square with an antique shop and a hotel restaurant. Poujols stands on the hill, above Villeneuve. The medieval village attracts many antiques lovers and it has a number of shops and art galleries in its lovely, half-timbered houses. There are two very good restaurants in the village and a Michelin starred restaurant on the other side of the little valley there. Monflanquin, a beautifully preserved hilltop bastide and one of the finest examples of its kind, was founded in 1256 and has a popular weekly market in the beautiful arcaded central square. Castelnaud-de-Gratecombe has a championship 18-hole course with a driving range, putting green and Pro shop, where you can hire golf clubs, trolleys and buggies. The Bergerac vineyards are an easy 50 minute drive away. The famous Monbazilliac vineyards just south of the town, produce a delicious white wine, which you can sample at the chateau that is good by itself or with foie gras. Travel Information
