Two Country Cottages in the Loire Valley
Vouzon, between Orleans and Blois. Lake with Private Fishing
Cottages: 5 and 3 bedrooms, sleeping up to 10 or 4/6 people
La Ferme du Poteau
Our farm lies on the edge of the ancient forest of Lamotte-Beuvron, close to the village of Vouzon, about 20 minutes South of Orleans. This is a quiet place, unspoiled, full of wildlife and beautiful in any season, a place to return to and relax, read, walk or cycle through the forest, fish in our lake and contemplate. We keep horses and other farm animals, including a donkey and a pony, which are gentle with children and love any amount of attention. The lake is small, about two acres, stocked with carp, pike and roach, and suitable for up to four or five anglers at any one time. There is also a row boat. Paris is 90 minutes from here.
Chambord is 35 km from away and is perhaps the most breathtaking of all the Loire châteaux. Hidden in twenty square miles of woods, crossed by great, straight avenues leading up to the château, there can be fewer more magnificent sights as you approach. Blois, Chenonceaux, Azay-le-Rideau, Cheverny and La Ferté Saint-Aubin are other châteaux within a reasonable drive, all unique in their way, some with gorgeous gardens. The symmetrical, classical architecture of Château de Cheverny is quite unlike most of the Loire châteaux. Privately owned, although open to the public, it is stylish and sumptuously furnished, still with the original 17th century decor. The two cottages are both on one level and entirely independent of one another, furnished with a mix of country furniture and centrally heated. Each has a barbecue and outside furniture. Children games are provided. Our laundry room is available to use.
Genet accommodates up to 12 people. It has two salons, one with sofa and chairs around the fireplace, the other a dining area, television and a kitchen equipped with an oven and hob, fridge, dishwasher, microwave and coffee maker amongst other things. Of the five bedrooms, three have double beds, two have twin beds. They share two bathrooms, one with bath, the other with a shower and there are two wc's. Bruyères has been restored in the style of a chalet in keeping with its surroundings and sleeps 4 to 6 people. It has an open plan living room with a fireplace and a fully equipped kitchen and dining area. The three bedrooms share the bathroom. You are welcome to roam anywhere you like on the farm and there are numerous walks though the woods and fields, broken by carpets of broom and heather. Nature and silence are master here. Sometimes you can glimpse roe deer and at certain times of the year, hear the call of the stags.
The Area
Vouzon and Lamotte-Beuvron have a choice of shops and Orleans is only 20 minutes away. Food is one of the treasures of the Loire and you can find good restaurants in Muides-sur-Loire, Saint-Dyé-sur-Loire and at Beaugency or Cheverny. Highly recommended is Le Moulin de Bracieux and the two star Michelin restaurant, Lion d'Or at Romorantin. We will be happy to recommend others. There are three golf courses within 10 km (two 18-holes and one exceptional 27-holes) and others in and around Orleans, canoeing and boat trips on the Canal d'Orleans or the Canal de Briare and some marvellous walks and cycle rides along the tow paths by the River Loire. The name of Orleans is inseparably linked with that of Joan of Arc and there is evidence of her everywhere; in statues, her life history depicted in the cathedral's stained glass windows, the house where she stayed in 1429. The Cheverny and Cour-Cheverny vineyards around Blois on the south bank of the Loire, carry the Cheverny appellations and welcome visits. Some of the best of these wines comes from Chitenay. Chinon and Vouvray are others. Sancerre is an hour from here. Travel Information
