Delightful Riverside Cottage in the Pays de la Loire
Pontvallain, between Le Mans and the Loire Valley
1 bedroom, sleeps 2 to 4 people. Private River Fishing.
Moulin de Fautereau
The mill lies peacefully beside a small river just outside the little village of Pontvallain in the Sarthe, about 35 km from Le Mans. The cottage is independent of the main house and has much charm. Carefully restored with all modern comforts in keeping with its original character, it makes an ideal base from which to enjoy this beautiful, relatively unknown part of the Pays de la Loire, or to simply come and relax for a few days and do some fishing. We know the area well and will be on hand to help with anything you need to know.
Le Mans is famous for motor sports and has at least one event per month throughout the year, culminating in the 24 hour event in mid June and the Classic Car event in July, which attracts competitors and fans from all over Europe. Many of the best known châteaux in the Loire are less than hour from here, though each really needs at least a day to see, combined with a good lunch. The cottage is on one level and furnished in a country style. It has a beamed main room with a fireplace as the focal point, a sofa bed, chairs, a coffee table and television, a dining table and a separate kitchen, fully equipped with pans, plates, bowls and glasses, an oven and hob, microwave and fridge, plus a coffee maker, kettle and toaster.
The bedroom has comfortable twin beds and is furnished with old country furniture. The bathroom has a bath and a washing machine with a separate toilet. The cottage faces South, so gets the sun all day long. Garden furniture and a barbecue are provided. The North side of the cottage looks onto a large shady garden with lawns leading down to the river. Fish are mainly trout and pike (please bring your own equipment). You can easily walk to the village along the towpath (about 1 km) and there is private parking in the garage in the courtyard.
The Area
The Benedictine abbey at Solesmes is worth a visit, where you can listen to beautiful Gregorian chants that fill the silence and lift the spirit. The village of Malicorne has been making fine pottery since the 18th century (bring an extra bag). Le Mans is most famous for its motor racing tack and has every imaginable facility, but the town itself has an extremely attractive medieval centre with an elegant square lined with shops and restaurants. Near the track is a large motor museum open through the year. There is also zoological park in La Flèche and a lake with supervised swimming, which children love and within easy driving distance are the beautiful châteaux of the Loire Valley and many of the Anjou vineyards.
