Bed and Breakfast in Languedoc Roussillon
Boutenac, in the Corbières vineyards between Carcassonne and Narbonne
2 double rooms with private shower rooms
La Corbière
Our house is in Boutenac, a small vineyard village in the middle of the Corbières vineyards, which produces a range of red, white and rosé wines and has its own appellation controlée. Needless to say there are numerous opportunities to sample the wines and we will be happy to introduce you to the vineyard owners here. This is ancient Cathar country, where the powerful remains of feudal châteaux stand high on lonely hilltops, as a reminder of that period in Languedoc's history. Narbonne is 20 minutes from here and the Mediterranean beaches are just beyond. Carcassonne is 30 minutes away and the Spanish border is an hour's drive.
Our home is a relaxing retreat for both couples and families alike and we and our young family look forward to welcoming you. We have two comfortable double rooms, each with a shower room, which can be taken separately or together as a suite, for a family or friends travelling together. An extra bed can be provided if needed and a cot, highchair, baby bath and pushchair can be provided on request.
Breakfast sets you up for the day with good fresh coffee or tea, fruit juice, bowels of brioches and croissants, breads, home made jams and sometimes, local honey. Apart from Narbonne, Lézignan-Corbières is our nearest town about 10 minutes away and there are any number of local restaurants within easy driving distance. We can advise on anything you want to know.
The Area
Narbonne is a likeable southern town with canalside walks, attractive squares and busy boulevards with shops and cafés. The Art Deco Les Halles market is a feast for both eyes and appetite. Oysters are everywhere. Le Bourg is the medieval area south of the Canal de la Robine, while La Cité, north of the canal, is the grander historic area around the enormous 13th and 14th century cathedral. Just outside the town is the huge beach at Narbonne-Plage with a harbour at one end and beach front bars, shops, restaurants and various water sports facilities. Gruissan has a large marina, several beaches and good seafood restaurants and along the coast are little fishing villages like Bages and Periac de Mer. The Sigean African Reserve near Narbonne is an opportunity to see animals in a well designed mixture of drive-through and walk-past enclosures. Villerouge-Termenès, not far from here, is an evocative Cathar village. It is also worth a stop on the way to Narbonne, to see the elegant 12th and 13th century cloisters, church and chapterhouse of the lovely Cistercian Abbey de Fontfroide, a reminder that even during the Cathar period, the Catholic church was still a powerful presence in this region. Further South is Touchan, centre of the Fitou wine area (the village of Fitou itself is near the coast). The old city of Carcassonne rises like a mirage as you drive towards it and is worth seeing for that sight alone. Although today the warren of streets inside the great walls are teaming with people and full of little shops and restaurants, it was probably much the same in medieval times, full of traders and travellers from as far away as Provence or Spain, and you can still get a sense of what it must have been like in those days.
