Country Cottage with Private Fishing in the Lot et Garonne
Lafox, near Agen, between Toulouse and Bordeaux
3 bedrooms, sleeps up to 6 people

Ferme du Château de Lafox

We are in a beautiful country location at Lafox, a village about 8 km from Agen, in the Lot et Garonne between Toulouse and Bordeaux in the South West of France. The cottage is part of the farm on the Château de Lafox estate dating from the 13th and 18th centuries, bordered by a river with a corner for private fishing (mainly trout, tench, perch, carp). There is lots of space to wander around in, where children can run around freely and farm animals they can get to know and learn about. In front of the cottage is a large lawn with a small chapel and, across the way from this, is the château.

The Lot et Garonne is a region of gentle wooded hills and green valleys, of fields of corn and sunflowers in summer, quiet country roads, little tucked away villages, each with their own story to tell, market towns and here and there, an ancient hilltop village dating from the Middle Ages. Lafox and other surrounding villages are minutes away by car and have shops where you can find most essentials. Agen has all the variety of shops, supermarkets, banks, markets and facilities you could wish for.

The gite is newly restored, simple but comfortably furnished with rest and relaxation in mind, centrally heated and has all the old charm of a traditional cottage. The main living room faces south, opens straight into the garden and has a sofa, dining area and small corner kitchen equipped with a washing machine, oven and hob, fridge, coffee maker and all necessary glasses, dishes and utensils. There is also a downstairs shower room and separate wc.

Upstairs are the three bedrooms, two double rooms and a smaller room with twin beds. On the landing is a second shower room and a separate wc. A cot, highchair, changing mat and baby bath are available on request.

The garden is typical of this part of the South with sunny corners, space, trees and flowers and the farm has all sorts of nooks and crannies. There is outside furniture and private parking.

The Area

There are a number of restaurants in the surrounding area and in Agen, some with an excellent reputation, most very reasonably priced. In particular L'Aubergade, in Puymirol, which has two Michelin stars, (booking well in advance may be necessary). The Lot et Garonne is the garden of France, which is reflected in cooking here, a region that is full of orchards and farms that grow strawberries and melons, tomatoes that taste like tomatoes and delicious Chasselas grapes, others that produce goat's cheese, hazelnuts, foie gras and duck.

For those who enjoy sport, there are riding stables that cater for all levels of expertise and can organise accompanied treks, tennis courts, golf courses, swimming pools, boat trips on the canal and river and small local airports where you can take flying lessons or go gliding. This is also great cycling and walking country with well mapped routes. The theme park near Agen is fun for both children and adults.

The area is dotted with medieval bastide towns and villages; Pujols, Monflanquin, Villereal to the north, or Moissac, further south, prettily situated above the River Tarn and surrounded by orchards. Auvillar is an ancient bastide village of great character that has an unusual market hall and triangular marketplace. The Albret Valley is immensely rich in history with châteaux, churches and small picturesque villages, Henri IV's mill house in Barbaste and his château in Nérac. Forty minutes to the south is Condom, the centre for Armagnac brandy.

The Buzet, Duras and Bergerac vineyards are about an hour's drive and the Bordeaux vineyards, including St Emilion and those around Cahors, are roughly 90 minutes from here.
