Manor House Cottage near Deauville in Normandy
Les Authieux-sur-Calonne, between Honfleur and Trouville in Calvados
4 bedrooms, sleeps up to 10 people
Manoir de la Porte
The cottage is part of the Manoir de la Porte estate, completely independent and very typical of the traditional architectural style of the Calvados area of Normandy. There is a large park, which you are welcome to to wander around in. We are 10 km from Pont l'Evêque, about 20 minutes from both Deauville, Honfleur and the beaches at Trouville and less than an hour from the Normandy Landing Beaches. Paris is 2 hours from here.
The Pays d'Auge is an area of lush pastureland, valleys and apple orchards, where some of the best cider and finest calvados brandy is made and you can visit many of the farms to taste and buy direct. Villages that capture the essence of Normandy; Cormeilles, Beaumont-en-Auge, Beuvron-en-Auge, Blangy-le-Château are also worth a detour. You always eat well here and the menus are varied and generous, so there is something to suit all tastes and pockets. There are numerous restaurants to choose from, including several Michelin starred ones and some excellent seafood restaurants along the coast. Dairy cattle provide rich milk for a galaxy of cheeses like Pont l'Evêque, Livarot and Camembert and cream and cider as well as calvados are used in many dishes. The cottage has a large living room with a fireplace and windows glassed in between the colombage beams, overlooking the countryside beyond. The kitchen is equipped with an oven and hob, dishwasher, microwave and fridge plus coffee machine, kettle and toaster. There is also a downstairs bathroom and the house is fully centrally heated.
Upstairs are four bedrooms in total: 2 small double rooms, one of which has a small single room leading off it. Of the 2 other bedrooms, one has bunk beds and the other a double and a single bed. There is also a corner television area with a sofa bed and a bathroom with shower and wc.
The Area
Normandy is great horse country and for anyone who likes riding there are a number of stables to choose from, who organise treks through the forests or on the beach in Deauville. The beach at Trouville caters well for families and there are others along the coast, which have water sports facilities. The lake at Pont l'Evêque has boats and canoes and there is a Go-kart track. Both Deauville and Trouville have golf courses. Deauville has always been fashionable and there are shops to match. Events through the year include a Film Festival in September, a Music Festival at Easter and a succession of tennis, golf, bridge and polo tournaments. Honfleur, lies at the mouth of the River Seine, a busy fishing port and marina that has an enduring charm and character of its own and a long seafaring history. In the 19th century it attracted many painters, poets and musicians like Sisley, Pisarro and Monet, Baudelaire and Saté and even today, you can walk along the quays and find artists at work.
