17th Century Village House in Burgundy
Noyers-sur-Serein, between Chablis and Auxerre in the Yonne
3 bedrooms, sleeps 2 to 5 people

La Maison de Sainte Vérote

Noyers sur Serein is a timeless medieval village, cradled in a loop of the River Serein, about 15 km from Chablis and 35 km from Auxerre, in the beautiful Yonne area of Burgundy. The house is tucked into the ramparts beside the Porte de Sainte-Vérote, the ancient gateway leading into the heart of the village. Now fully restored, it has the charm and character of a doll's house, a peaceful walled garden and makes a good base for couples, families or friends from which to explore the treasures of this region and become a part of the life of the village for a while.

Nothing much has changed over the centuries. Around every corner are cobbled streets and Renaissance houses with hanging baskets and pots of flowers, the squares have dainty arcades and half-timbered houses, the church is flamboyantly Gothic and well cared for. Shops are within walking distance of the house and anyone will tell where everything is. Other towns and villages like Annay, Ancy le Franc, Tanlay and Pontigny, the great abbey of Fontenay, Flavigny and spiritual Vézelay are within 15 to 50 minutes drive. Paris is 150 km from here.

Decorated in warm colours and furnished in a country style giving the house a relaxed atmosphere, its position a little away from the main part of the village means that it is quiet here. The garden is raised and overlooks open countryside and the river.

On three levels, the ground floor of the house has a main living room with a fireplace, television, DVD and a hi-fi system, a dining area and a corner kitchen equipped with an oven and hob, dishwasher, fridge and all the dishes, pots, pans and utensils you would need. The laundry room has a washing machine and ironing facilities. There is a downstairs wc and access onto a south facing terrace.

The first floor has a double bedroom with a balcony, furnished in traditional style with a bureau, a dressing table with drawers and a wardrobe, and a bathroom with bath and wc.

The second floor has a mezzanine salon area with books and games and two communicating bedrooms, one twin and one single room, furnished with a chest of drawers, a small desk and wardrobe.

The terrace and balcony both have outside furniture. The garden has plants, flowers and fruit trees providing shady spots to read or doze and there are sunbeds and a table and chairs. Two bicycles are available.

The Area

The Chablis vineyards are 15 minutes away by car or bike. A medieval town snug amongst its famous vineyards, it is fiercely protective of its quintessentially fine wines and justly so. The whole town is completely devoted to the wine and you can sample it over a good lunch at a number of restaurants or simply sit at a table and taste a range of different ones by the glass. Chablis also has tennis courts open to anyone.

One of the most sumptuous Renaissance château in Burgundy is in Tanlay about 20 minutes away. Another château, modelled on an Italian palazzo, is in Ancy-le-Franc near Tanlay, fit for a king and used as a royal palace for centuries. The River Serein flows past Pontigny, the finest Cistercian abbey in Burgundy, rivalled only by Fontenay. Pontigny forged close links with Canterbury in England and Thomas a Becket was exiled there for a time.

Burgundy is as famous for its food as for its wine, so you can find restaurants ranging from small family auberges to gastronomic almost anywhere you go.
