Country Cottage in the Lot-et-Garonne, Southwest France
La Sauvetat-de-Savères, between Agen and Villeneuve-sur-Lot
1 bedroom + mezzanine, sleeping 2 to 6 people
Combe de Sarda
The cottage is on part of our farming estate in the hills overlooking the fields of sunflowers and corn in the Séoune Valley, near the village of La Sauvetat de Savères. The main house, dovecote and barns dating from the 18th century, are grouped around a courtyard and there are twenty four hectares of fields, woods and a lake to roam around in, lots of nooks and crannies for children to explore and farm animals to make friends with and learn about: peacocks, hens, a herd of dairy cattle and their calves, our cat and dog. The market towns of Villeneuve-sur-Lot or Agen are roughly 20 minutes from here.
Ideal for a couple or a family, the cottage is independently situated and fully restored in keeping with its original character. A path through the woods and across the field leads down to the village, which has a general grocery store that carries most things, a boulangerie, post office, petrol station and doctor. There are Sunday morning markets in Agen and Roquecor, a huge Saturday one in Villeneuve and a Tuesday market in Valence d'Agen. Laroque Timbaut is a village 12 km from here in the St Germain Valley, well known for its lakes, the old town keep and the Gertrude Schoen Museum, which has tempting menus and friendly service. Puymirol is a village 6 km away, which has a Michelin star restaurant famous throughout France, worth at least one visit and there are several other reasonable priced ones within easy driving distance.
The entrance to the cottage opens straight into the dining room and kitchen, which has a dining table with six chairs, an armoire and a fireplace with a wood burning stove. The kitchen is equipped with, among other things, an oven and hob, fridge, microwave, kettle, coffee maker and toaster. Next door is a sitting room with a sofa bed, armchair, coffee table, bureau and television and another fireplace. Behind this is a bathroom with shower, washbasin and wc and a washing machine. The double bedroom is furnished with an armoire, writing table and two chairs with a window that looks out over the fields and hills beyond. Stairs from the salon lead to a large mezzanine with wood floors and beams that has four single beds, two chairs and a small table, an armchair, lamp and bedside table. Books and various games are provided. The front of the cottage has garden furniture and a table with 6 chairs. The best kind of barbecue in our experience is the most simple, using charcoal circled by stones with a grill on top! But we also have a 'proper' barbecue! A hammock for drowsy afternoons is provided and there are peaceful panoramic views from the benches in the garden. You often come across deer, red squirrels and badgers on the farm. A barn owl lives in the dovecote and the swallows return year after year to nest. In spring and early summer, the woods and meadows are full of briar roses and honeysuckle, wild orchids, sweet william and gladioli and the scent of wild mint.
The Area
There is something here for everyone! Puymirol has a swimming pool and is in itself a pretty medieval village. Beauville (8 km) has a lake where you can swim or fish, Dondas (4 km) has tennis courts. There are riding stables 3 km from us and numerous trails and country lanes that are ideal for walking or cycling. There is lots of detailed local information in the cottage. You can see the largest collection of water lilies in Europe in Temple-sur-Lot and visit the underground caves in Fontirou and the exotic gardens in Colayrac St Cirq. The Foie Gras Museum in Frespech is an Aladdin's Cave of every imaginable kind of foie gras and duck possible, plus other mouthwatering goodies such as organic bread and melons, free range chicken, wine and cheese, all locally made. In summer, there are regular open air concerts in the place de l'Hôtel de Ville in Agen, which you can pause and listen to and maybe join in with the dancing. For children, the Walabi theme park just outside Agen and the Arc-en-Ciel park in Lacapelle-Biron are good for a fun day out. Travel Information
