La Maison de Nell
Our house is in the little village of Gauré, tucked in a valley surrounded by fields of wheat and sunflowers, 15 km from Toulouse. Everything is at hand, the pleasures of the city and the peace and beauty of the countryside, where you can relax by the pool here or ride, walk and cycle almost anywhere you like. We have four en suite double rooms and a suite with two bedrooms, suitable for family or friends travelling together. Dinner is available on request, and a chance to enjoy some of the dishes and wines this region is famous for.
All the rooms have been individually decorated with comfort and charm in mind and furnished with family furniture. Each has a bathroom with either a bath or shower and a hairdryer is provided. A large room with a mezzanine dining area where breakfast is served and a television area and a games room with a pool table are available to guests. There is also a corner kitchen with an oven and hob, microwave, fridge and dishwasher for those who wish to make light snacks, picnics or children's meals.
Fleur de lotus is a family suite furnished in a colonial style comprising a large double bedroom, a smaller bedroom with two single beds, a bathroom with bath and separate wc and a covered terrace with a view of the swimming pool. Tournesol is a double room on the ground floor next to the pool, decorated in the colours of the sun, which has a double bed and a bathroom with bath and separate wc. Violette is a double room, again on the ground floor next to the pool, decorated in a baroque style with a fireplace and a bathroom with shower and separate wc. Pâquerette is a soft, romantic room for two or three people with a double and a single bed and a bathroom with both bath and shower and separate wc. Outside is a large garden with parking space, a barbecue and a swimming pool with splendid views over the valley, shady places in which to relax and is a pleasant spot to have lunch. The nearest shops are 2.5 km from here and have most things. The nearest petrol station and banks are at Verfeil, 7 km away and you can usually find a local market going on in one of our neighbouring villages. Revel, 30 minutes away, has one of the most most beautiful market places in France and is well worth the trip. Toulouse has a huge range of restaurants to suit all tastes and pockets. I will be happy to recommend some of the most popular ones in and around Toulouse.
The Area
There are golf courses, lakes at Flourens and Verfeil where you can spend a day fishing or take a row boat out and several riding stables within a few minutes drive. The huge lake at Saint Ferréol has a beach with supervised swimming and water sports facilities including windsurfing. The lakeside restaurant there has a good lunch menu. The beautiful hilltop town of Cordes-sur-Ciel near Albi and the old city of Carcassonne are both roughly 45 minutes from Gauré. Carcassonne puts on the most dazzling firework display on the 14th of July, made more spectacular against the stunning background of the city. Revel, apart from its lovely market place, is famous for making marquetry furniture and the town is full of antique shops. The Gaillac vineyards are within an easy drive and we can recommend several, which you can visit to taste and buy wine directly. The Canal du Midi is about 15 km from here, where you can walk or cycle along the tow path lined with plane trees or take an evening cruise sitting at a table over dinner. If you spend an hour or two at the Museum des Augustin, we highly recommend lunch at Chez Carmen. If you go to see the Basilica of Saint Sernin, stop at the restaurant at 7 place Saint Sernin, a magnificent setting and an excellent menu. Toulouse, known as the 'rose city', is young and lively, has a passion for rugby and is full of art galleries, museums and elegant shops with a succession of arts and music events throughout the year.
