Charming Family House with pool in the Dordogne
Castelnaud near Sarlat and Beynac in Aquitaine, Southwest France
4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, sleeps up to 8 people
Le Bois de Selves
Our house lies a short walk from an arcadian stretch of the River Dordogne within sight of Beynac, Fayrac, Castelnaud and Marqueyssac, four of the most beautiful châteaux in the area. The open views across the valley from every room in the house and from the garden and the pool are quite extraordinary, changing each day with the light and the seasons. Children can run about freely and safely here and you can walk almost anywhere you like through the countryside around us.
Castelnaud is our nearest village a kilometre from here and has essential shops. The town of Sarlat is 8 km from here, a place full of Renaissance mansions and medieval houses with gables and turrets, shops and restaurants, hidden in a maze of narrow streets. The Saturday morning market is famous and people come from miles around to meet and catch up with news, as well as to shop. The house has recently been refurbished in keeping with the traditional perigordian style and is furnished with comfort in mind. Everything is new.
The salon is decorated in tones of beige and chocolate, has a large fireplace and is furnished with three sofas and antique country furniture. The kitchen also has a traditional fireplace, a dining table, marble work surfaces and is fully equipped with everything that would satisfy most enthusiastic cooks. The utility room has a large stainless steel fridge/freezer, laundry facilities and opens onto the north terrace. The Moroccan television room has a flat screen television and DVD and could be used as an extra bedroom if needed. The downstairs bathroom has both bath and shower, double washbasins and is decorated in tones of grey and white. Upstairs are two en suite double bedrooms. The second floor has a double and a twin room that share a bathroom. We have put in a giant trampoline and table tennis to amuse the children, while their parents relax around the pool. The pool has 360 degree views and is equipped with teak sunbeds and a security cover.
The Area
The Dordogne is famous for its food and there is no doubt that you can eat well and reasonably here at any number of restaurants. Duck, goose, foie gras and freshwater fish, spiked with truffles, chestnuts and wild mushrooms, figure on most menus, together with generous salads and delicious soups. Local wines include those from Bergerac, Buzet and Monbazillac as well as Cahors and Bordeaux. There are golf courses, tennis courts and riding stables within a short drive and canoe hire bases along the Dordogne river, which gives a wonderfully different perspective. The beautiful gardens of Eyrignac are nearby and well worth seeing. The prehistoric caves at Les Eyzies have amazing drawings of bison, ibex, deer, horses and bulls in a multitude of brilliant colours. Apart from the chateaux you can walk to from the house, there are others like graceful Milandes, once the home of Josephine Baker. Domme, perched high above the river valley, is a 13th century bastide village with pretty honey coloured houses leading to the market place and to a point looking down to the Dordogne river far below and out towards waves of hills receding into the Auvergne.
