Chateau Cottage On A Vineyard In The Loire Valley
Chinon, close to the great chateaux of the Loire
3 bedrooms, sleeps up to 6 people. Private swimming pool.
Le Castel du Plessis Gerbault
The cottage is all that remains of the original 16th century castle on the Chateau de Vaugaudry vineyard estate just outside Chinon in the Loire Valley. It is set amongst the vines on the side of a hill on the left bank of the River Vienne within sight of the great medieval castle at Chinon. The peace of the riverside attracts many different species of birds; moorhens, herons, kingfishers and animals such as beavers. Most of our wines are red, some of the best known in the Loire, although we also make a light, fresh rosé. They include Plessis-Gerbault from the vines around the cottage, a special reserve made from the oldest vines and aged in oak; delicious when young, even better with age. We will be happy to show around our cellars to taste.
Chinon is about 5 minutes by car and has all kinds of shops, markets every Sunday and Tuesday morning and a good choice of restaurants. The centre of the town has many lovely old houses, particularly around the Rue Voltaire and the Place du Grand Carroi, which has associations with such historical figures as Richard the Lionheart and Joan of Arc, who stayed at the inn here while waiting to be received by the king. Many of the loveliest of the Loire chateaux are less than an hour from here. The entrance of the cottage leads into the main room, which has a huge fireplace and a dining table flanked by two buffet tables and is furnished with a sofa and chairs. There is television and a hi-fi and a downstairs cloakroom. The kitchen is equipped with everything needed, including a dishwasher and washing machine, fridge, oven and hob, microwave, coffee machine, kettle and toaster.
Upstairs are two bedrooms, one with a double bed, one with two single beds and a cot. The bathroom has both bath and shower and heated towel rails. The wc is separate. On the top floor is a third double room with a shower room. A hairdryer is provided. Garden furniture and a barbecue are scattered on the lawn and the swimming pool is exclusive to the cottage. Both adults and children can enjoy trips in the canoes and discover the gentle, wild beauty of the river. There are guides and general local information in English and French at the house.
The Area
There is an 18-hole golf course in Roiffé (20 minutes) and tennis courts in Chinon. This is great riding country and there are stables where you can hire horses to suit all levels of expertise in Avoine, 10 minutes away. Children may prefer the ponies at Cinais, 5 minutes from here. Some of the greatest of the Loire châteaux are less than an hour's drive. Chenonceaux (45 minutes), built over the river Cher in 1520, is a must. Given to his mistress Diane de Poitiers by Henry II, it was later owned by Catherine de Medici, who created part of the gardens there. The graceful Renaissance Château d'Azay-le-Rideau (15 minutes) is beautifully set amongst trees on the edge of a small village, moated by the Indre river. The gardens especially are worth seeing. Chambord (1 hour), a forerunner of Versailles, is the largest and perhaps the most imposing of all with no fewer than 440 rooms and a huge staircase. Many of the kings of France came to spend the summer here and Moliére wrote several of his plays while staying here. Travel Information
