Comfortable House with Pool in the Dordogne
Saint-Sauveur, near Bergerac, in Aquitaine, Southwest France
4 bedrooms plus mezzanine, sleeping up to 8 or 9 people
Les Garris
The house is very typical of the region, full of character and charm, a place where you can dawdle, daydream and regain a sense of peace. We have over twenty acres to roam around in with a small lake stocked mainly with trout, 7 km from the center of Bergerac, close to the Péchamant vineyards. The house is quite independent from the main house and has its own private pool. We keep horses and ponies for those who like to ride, which graze in the fields around us.
Saint Sauveur is our nearest village 3 km away. Bergerac lies on the banks of the Dordogne river and has an attractive old center, numerous restaurants to choose from, open air cafes, supermarkets, shops of every kind and markets on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. You can hire canoes, take boat trips on the river and visit the vineyards that surround the town. From early summer until autumn, successions of country antiques markets are held throughout the area, when you may come across some treasures.
The interior of the house has been decorated in a Deco style and made as comfortable as possible. Sometimes, from the terrace in the early morning or evening, you can see the deer that come out of the woods to feed in the orchard. The main room is open plan, divided into a lounge area with a sofa and armchairs, in front of a large fireplace with television DVD and a dining room area with a round dining table. There is a music room with a grand piano, which also has a television. The kitchen is just off the main room, entirely equipped, including a dishwasher, oven and hob, microwave, coffee maker, kettle and toaster. The laundry room has a washing machine and dryer and ironing facilities. The two downstairs bedrooms are, one double room with an armoire wardrobe, chest of drawers and a writing table and a study bedroom with a single divan bed. The bathroom has a hairdryer and there are two wc’s. Upstairs are two other double rooms, one of which is a twin room. These have a writing desk, dressing table or chest of drawers and share a shower room with a hairdryer. Above the music room is a mezzanine bedroom with twin beds. There is garden furniture outside, private parking and a swimming pool complete with pool house, terrace, poolside furniture, a bar, fridge and barbecue. We have cherry trees, plums, figs and walnut trees in the orchard; please help yourself to as many as you can eat in season.
The Area
We have fishing in the little lake on the property, table tennis and a pool table. There are marvellous walks through the woods, endless places to cycle and a good golf course near Bergerac. The little village of Issigeac has a popular Sunday morning market and is a delight to walk around. It also has a very good restaurant. Following the river east from Bergerac are a series of charming riverside villages and dramatically situated châteaux, as far as the 13th century village of Domme. One side of Domme falls in a sheer drop to the river below and there is an esplanade, which has stunning views across the river valley towards the feudal castle of Beynac. Beyond there is Sarlat with its beautiful, twisting, honey coloured cobbled streets and popular markets on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. The medieval streets are packed with numerous restaurants and cafés, shops and, during the summer months, street entertainers, who provide lively entertainment during the evenings. Périgueux cathedral, designed by the architect of Sacre Coeur in Paris, is a beautiful backdrop to the weekly Wednesday morning markets and the town has some excellent food shops. Travel Information
