Apartment in an Historic Chateau in Southwest France
Lanquais, near Bergerac in the Dordogne, Aquitaine
2 bedrooms, sleeps up to 5 people
Le Château de Lanquais
The chateau is a mixture of medieval and Renaissance architecture and has been in our family for six generations. Set in acres of wooded parkland and gardens to roam around in, the house is 15 minutes from Bergerac, in the pretty village of Lanquais. The apartment is on the second floor in the Renaissance part of the house and is completely private and independent. At the foot of the chateau in a lovely setting, is a lake with a sandy beach where you can swim and sunbathe.
Lanquais has a good restaurant with a range of reasonably priced menus, which also has a friendly bar, a general grocery store and an excellent baker for fresh bread and croissants for breakfast. Lalinde, 7 km has a supermarket, shops and a Thursday market, held on the same day for 900 years. Issigeac, 10 km in the other direction, has a popular Sunday morning market, best combined with lunch at Chez Alain. Bergerac has a lovely old quarter leading down to the River Dordogne, good shopping, a choice of restaurants and cafés, a big market on Saturday mornings and a succession of events throughout the year. The Monbazillac vineyards are to the south of the town, the tiny Pécharmant vineyards are just to the north.
The apartment is decorated in keeping with the style of the period, furnished with family furniture and has wonderful high ceilings and views over the park and gardens. There is a huge main sitting room with a carved 17th century stone fireplace and television, part of which has been made into a twin bedroom area. At the end of the hallway are a double bedroom and a small staircase, which leads up to a romantic single room. To the right of the hall is the kitchen, equipped with fridge, cooker, microwave, washing machine, toaster and coffee maker. The bathroom has a bath/shower with a separate wc. The gardens and terraces are yours to enjoy. Games for children can be provided on request. There is private parking and we will be happy to recommend local restaurants and help with anything you need to know.
The Area
Apart from the lake here, you can hire a canoe/kayak in Bergerac for a day on the river or take a riverboat cruise combined with lunch or dinner, which is a wonderful way to see the Dordogne from another perspective. There are also many peaceful spots to fish from where the river passes by, 2 km from Lanquais. We can recommend local riding stables near here, which will organize treks for an hour or a day. There is a 9-hole golf course 10 minutes away, a quad track in Lalinde, tennis courts in the village or you can take a helicopter flight from a private airfield near Bergerac. Driving through quiet country lanes, past groves of chestnut trees, farms and in the summer, valley fields of maize and sunflowers, takes you perhaps to Les Milandes the lovely Renaissance château, which was once the home of the singer Josephine Baker, or to some of the great feudal châteaux like Beynac and Castelnaud, perched high above the river. The beautiful medieval town of Sarlat and Les Eyzies, an extraordinary series of prehistoric caves with amazing cave paintings are roughly an hour from Lanquais. Travel Information
