Holiday Homes In France
Traditional House with infinity pool in the Midi Pyrénées
Calès, between Rocamadour and Souillac, in the Lot
3 bedrooms, sleeps up to 6 people
The house, restored in a Provencal style, is near the village of Calès, in the heart of the beautiful Lot valley, near Rocamadour, about 15 minutes from Souillac. We are surround by nothing but silence and beauty, where life is unhurried and relaxed and there is time to look around you and feel the warmth of the sun on your face.
The village has most essential shops and a weekly market. Souillac has a large choice of shops, banks, specialist shops, supermarkets and an excellent 18-hole golf course. Brive is 30 minutes from here, Cahors is 50 minutes, Toulouse 90 minutes.
The house has an open plan main room with a fireplace and television DVD, furnished with a mix of traditional and modern furniture. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything needed, including a dishwasher, oven and hob, microwave, coffee maker and toaster.
There are three bedrooms in total, two double rooms with en suite shower rooms and one twin room with a washbasin and wc. A hairdryer is provided.
The infinity swimming pool is secured for the safety of young children and there is a large garden, poolside furniture, a barbecue and, private parking.
Food is a central part of life here and there are any number of reasonably priced restaurants to choose from. Lamb raised on the Causse, served with foie gras and a truffle flavoured sauce, is especially good, or maybe a fillet steak with morels, or freshly caught local trout, or foie gras, lightly sautéed with a walnut wine sauce and fresh country bread, finished with cabécou cheese and a slice of Pastis, which is not a drink, but a delicious fruit pie, usually filled with apples or pears and plum brandy. All of which goes down very well with a bottle of Cahors wine.
This is great walking and cycling country and within a short drive are tennis courts and riding stables, you can go canoeing on the Dordogne or spend the day fishing and there are several golf courses to choose from.
Not far from here are a number of amazing prehistoric caves, including those at Montignac and Lascaux. The Pech-Merle caves are possibly the most interesting of all the prehistoric caves in France. There are several intercommunicating chambers, full of shapes and colours, paintings of mammoths, horses and bison and in places, the outline of the open palm of a hand, which is almost as thrilling as meeting prehistoric man himself!
You cannot leave without visiting Rocamadour, a remarkable medieval village built into the side of the cliff or St Cirq Lapopie, which stands high above the Lot river. Geraniums cascade from the wood balconies of ancient houses along narrow streets and the village is a good place perhaps, to go for lunch.
