Two Country Gites with pool in the Dordogne
Calès, between Bergerac and Sarlat, in Aquitaine, Southwest France
2 bedrooms each, sleeping 4 to 5 people
La Ferme de l'Antoine
Our house is part of the little village of Calès, tucked in a small valley overlooking the River Dordogne, near the lovely medieval village of Lalinde, 25 kms from Bergerac. We have two large, independent gite apartments in the newly restored barn dating from the 17th century that have all modern comforts combined with original character and charm.
There is a great sense of space and peace here. We are within an easy drive of an excellent golf course and you can walk cross-country almost anywhere you like or cycle through quiet lanes, hardly meeting a soul. For those who enjoy wine, history or simply a relaxed quality of life, there is something for everyone.
Both apartments have a large main room with a sitting room and dining area, television, a wood burning stove and a fitted kitchen equipped with an oven and hob, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge, microwave, coffee maker and toaster. There is also a downstairs guest wc. Upstairs are two double bedrooms and a bathroom with a shower and wc. Outside each apartment is a large private terrace with garden furniture and a barbecue and a big courtyard with a parking area. The apartments can also be taken together for a large family or friends travelling together, please enquire. The swimming pool and pool house is fenced for the safety of young children and set a little further away from the apartments. A great place to laze and unwind with a view that stretches for miles. Lalinde has a good choice of shops and a weekly market on Thursday. There are any number of local restaurants to choose from ranging from intimate family run ones to Michelin starred.
The Area
There are designated GR routes for walkers and cyclists from both Lalinde and Calès and you can hire bikes in Trémolat. There is a golf course in Belvès (15 km) and fishing in the river, a short walk from the house. Beaumont is a 13th century hilltop bastide town about 7 kms away that has marvellous views over the countryside and about 20 kms from here is Monpazier, perhaps one of the loveliest and most classically laid out of all the medieval bastide villages. Bergerac is a lovely old riverside town with small specialist shops, supermarkets, a large farmers market on Saturday mornings and numerous cafes and a variety of restaurants in the old quarter that holds a succession of events throughout the year. Péchamant is a small group of vineyards tucked away to the north of Bergerac, produces a particularly good red wine and Monbazillac to the south, produces a semi-sweet white wine, delicious on its own and especially good with foie gras or pastries. Another to look for are the Saussignac vineyards near here. The Bordeaux vineyards, Pomerol, St Emilion and Pauillac among them, are only an hour away. Issigeac has a teeming Sunday morning market, spreading through a warren of streets from the market square, where you can find piles of fresh fruit and vegetables, stalls with local wine and farm cheeses, sometimes a dozen different kinds of country bread, smoked duck breast and foie gras, basketware and pottery, or garden plants. There is also an excellent restaurant opposite the old château. Sarlat, further along the river with its maze of narrow streets, medieval and Renaissance houses, is pleasant to walk around and worth a visit. Not far from there are the extraordinary prehistoric caves that surround the village of Les Eyzies. Travel Information
