Les Montiers
Beslon is a small country village with an amiable bar-restaurant, about 7 km from Villedieu-les-Poëles in the Southern Manche area of Normandy. Our house is very typical of the architecture here, surrounded by a garden, an apple orchard with a courtyard and private parking; a family home where we have spent many happy times. The house is ideally placed to enjoy this lovely region and all it has to offer, from the food and wine to cycling, golf, the beaches and local festivals. A peaceful haven in which to simply rest and relax, read a good book and feel the sun on your face. Granville and the beaches are 30 minutes from here, Caen is 45 minutes, Dinard an hour.
Villedieu has been making copper pans, pots, church bells and ships bells used the world over, since the 12th century and you can visit the workshop in the foundry to see demonstrations of copper making. The main street is lined with shops selling various pieces. The town has a large choice of shops, supermarkets, banks, cafes and bistros and a popular Tuesday morning market. The old town is lovely to wander around and has quiet inner courtyards like the Cour des Trois Rois and the Cour aux Lys.
The house has a living room looking onto the garden with a fireplace and television. The kitchen / dining room has direct access to the courtyard and a large dining table with chairs and benches that can seat up to 15 people. The kitchen is equipped with an oven and hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, coffee maker and toaster amongst other appliances and has a large fireplace, which can be used for barbecue grills. In an annex is a laundry room with a washing machine. Another annex provides storage for garden furniture and bicycles. Upstairs are three double bedrooms with bedside tables, a wardrobe, chair and a small writing table and two bathrooms, one with bath, one with a shower, both with toilets, plus another separate wc. The second floor has a twin room furnished with a wardrobe, a chest of drawers, bedside tables, a chair and a writing desk with a small hallway with a single divan if needed. Across the landing is a large attic bedroom with 7 single beds, suitable (and fun) for children. A cot is available on request. The garden is yours to enjoy and there is a large table and chairs for eating outside that seats ten people.
The Area
The huge Lake Dathée, at St Manvieu-Bocage, is good for all kinds of water sports from windsurfing, to catamaran sailing, canoeing and fishing. There is an excellent golf course beside it. La Renarderie, the riding stables at Mesnil-Clinchamps, cater for all ages and levels of expertise, provide lessons and organize accompanied treks through the beautiful Saint Sever forest. Various rambling routes include the GR223. Apart from the beaches and all the water sports facilities in Granville, there are tennis courts, a 27-hole golf course, gliding facilities and flights around Mont Saint Michel from the airfield just outside the town. There are also daily ferries during the summer to the islands of Jersey and Guernsey, which takes an hour, for a change of scene. On the way to Granville, take a detour to Saint Jean des Champs, a cider farm, where you can see how cider and calvados is made - and sample them! Just to the North of the house is the delightfully secluded Sienne valley and the romantic ruins of the 12th century Abbaye de Hambye, complete with circling rooks. To the South, is the beautiful simplicity of the abbey of Mont Saint Michel, which rises from the sea and dominates the landscape for miles. After a day spent seeing the area and breathing in the sea air, there is no better way to relax after a good meal than with a glass of fine old Calvados. Travel Information
