Small Private Manor House in the Heart of Burgundy
Moussy, between Nevers and Magny-Cours and Charité-sur-Loire
5 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms, sleeps up to 10 people
Le Vieux Château
Set on the edge of the village of Moussy, the manor house dates from the 17th Century and has been in our family for several generations. The house is Renaissance in style and period, authentically restored, furnished in a simple country way and comfortable in size. The house has lovely open views across the countryside and is surrounded by an orchard and garden with a courtyard enclosed by 16th century walls.
They say that Burgundy always leaves you with a trace of nostalgia. It is a region with a rich history and an independent spirit, of great Romanesque cathedrals and glittering coloured fish scale roof tiles, of full bodied wine and a hearty cuisine. Life here in the Nivernais is peaceful, in a soft, gentle landscape of forests and lakes, crossed with rivers and green meadows scattered with white Charolais cattle. Moussy is 11 km from Prémery, which has a supermarket, two boulangeries, a butcher, post office and several restaurants. We are 20 km from Corbigny, at the gateway to the Morvan Hills, one of the most beautiful national parks in France, famous for its food and ideal for walking, fishing and cycling. Nevers and the racing circuit at Magny-Cours are roughly 55 km from here. Paris is just over 2 hours, Dijon is 90 minutes.
The ground floor of the house has a large salon with a huge Renaissance fireplace and a dining room with a dining table that can seat up to fourteen. The kitchen is well equipped with everything needed, including a dishwasher, oven and hob, fridge, coffee maker, toaster. There is also a washing machine and dryer. Upstairs are 5 bedrooms, 4 with en suite bathrooms. Two are double rooms, three are twin rooms. A hairdryer is provided. One of the outbuildings has a pool table and table tennis and the grounds are yours to enjoy.
The Area
Prémery has a choice of shops and facilities plus tennis courts that are open to everyone. There are riding stables in Nolay or Sainte Marie and a lake where you can hire canoes, 15 minutes from the here. There are also several natural lakes and ponds minutes away, where you can swim with moorhens and swans, take a picnic, do some fishing, and endless walks straight from the village. Saint Révérien, just north of here has an excellent auberge and there is another in the village of Oulon, not far from there. The Canal de Nivernais, one of the loveliest to be found anywhere, where you can cycle along the towpath and hire a boat for the day, is 10 km away. Nevers lies beside the upper Loire, an ancient town famous for its distinctive pottery, which you can find in the area tucked between the ramparts and the river. There is a lively predestrianised shopping area just off the square where the Ducal Palace is, with a variety of antiques, china, jewellery and chocolate shops. The Convent of St-Gildard is the resting place of Saint Bernadette of Lourdes and a place of pilgrimage for many from all over the world. Seen from the 16th century bridge, Charité-sur-Loire looks much as it did in medieval times and it is perhaps the most attractive town on this stretch of the river. Just along from there are the Sancerre and Pouilly vineyards, each of which, in friendly competition, claims to make the best white wine in Burgundy. You will simply have to go to each village, find somewhere for lunch, and decide for yourself! Travel Information
