Bed and Breakfast In A Château Beside The Loire
Commelle-Vernays, near Roanne, 80 kms from Lyon
5 rooms and a suite with private bathrooms. With Pool.
Chateau de Bachelard
This romantic château was built at the end of the 17th century during the reign of Louis XIV and is situated on the banks of the river Loire, where the waters coming from deep within the gorges of Villerest and Vernay, emerge onto the the plains of Roanne. There are far reaching views across the countryside from here and some wonderful walks. If you enjoy fishing, our lake has carp, pike, perch and trout.
Roanne is 5 minutes away and has several good restaurants. One in particular, made famous by the Troigros family, opposite the station, is famous throughout France. The station was even repainted in salmon pink and green, in honour of their famous salmon in sorrel sauce. We have five bedrooms, including a suite of two adjoining bedrooms, all beautifully furnished with private bathrooms. Awarded 4 epis for comfort and charm. La Chambre Bleue has a large double bed, a corner salon area and a dressing room.
La Chambre Orange also has a large double bed. La Chambre du Peintre, with its surprising decor, has a double bedroom and a sitting room. La Suite de la Tour, in the tower is spacious and can accommodate six people in two bedrooms: La Chambre du Jardin, decorated in warm colours has four single beds and, La Chambre de la Tour, very relaxing with its Toile de Jouy decoration, has views to the East and West. Breakfast is served in the dining room, heated by an immense fire lit at the beginning of Autumn. The château has a library with a chess table and several warmly furnished sitting rooms with fireplaces. The park has different private areas with comfortable seating, where you can sit and relax. In summer breakfast is served on the terrace beside a garden with several century old trees. The swimming pool (17 x 7 metres), is filled with soft spring water. Dinner is available on request, prepared using seasonal fruits and vegetables from our garden as well as fresh farm produce and game. The Area
Within 10 kms, there are riding stables, where you can hire horses for an hour or a day, golf, and water sports on Lac de Villerest. There are also several well sign-posted routes for walking or cycling all around us. Or you can follow the wine route and visit the vineyards and cellars of young wine makers in love with their work, to taste and learn about Roannaise wines and look around some of the medieval villages along the way.
