Pretty Village House For Two In South West France
Salignac-Eyvigues between Brive and Sarlat, Dordogne
One bedroom, sleeps 2 people
The Little House
The ancient village of Salignac with its 12th century château sits in rolling countryside between the towns of Brive and Sarlat in the Dordogne. The village bustles along in much the same as it has done for centuries, surviving on the local economy, which is based mainly on agriculture, in particular the production of foie gras, walnuts and goats cheese.
The Little House is situated in a lane in the medieval quarter of the town, amongst houses built of mellow stone, small walled gardens and lanes built for horse and cart. All shops, including a baker, butcher, general grocer, bank, bar and restaurants, are all within one or two minutes easy walk. The house has been restored to a high standard and every effort made to provide the comforts of modern life (including satellite television) whilst retaining the old features of the property. The accommodation has been purposely designed for two people and consists of an entrance hall, a large bedroom with a double bed, a dressing room and an ensuite shower room.
An oak staircase gives access to the first floor and the main living room and kitchen, which in turn leads to the first floor terrace with its fine views over the medieval area, château and countryside. The kitchen is fully equipped with dishwasher, washing machine, full cooker, and microwave, refrigerator and enough of 'everything' for four people. Furniture on the terrace is for four people - barbecue included. The lake (about 10 minutes from The Little House) is a little piece of heaven on earth, situated at the end of the wooded valley, it is privately owned and is about one and a half acres in size. No roads, electricity poles, or any other sign of civilisation can be seen, only birds, butterflies and wild flowers. It is approached by a hidden road through the woods - in times of rain, it is best to walk, so it is a good idea to bring your wellingtons. The lake is well stocked with roach, rudd, tench and carp, best baits are maggots, a little ground bait and boilies or luncheon meat for the carp. Further fishing can be obtained in the rivers Vezère or Dordogne and the big lake near Brive, Lac du Causse, famous for its big carp. An ideal place to spend the day, it is safe to swim in the lake and picnic (picnic equipment supplied in The Little House) in the shade of one of the trees. The Area
There is much to do and see in the area, golf and horse riding are available in the nearby town of Souillac (15 minutes by car), the tennis courts are three minutes walk from the house. The prehistoric sites in Montignac and Les Eyzies (home of the prehistoric museum of Europe) are all worth a visit. The cité of Sarlat, famous for its goose market and now as a backdrop for films, is just 17 kms away. The market with the bright parasols and with just as colourful characters selling their wares and local produce, is held on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Sometimes a little crowded, but worth a visit to taste the wines, foie gras and strawberries of this region. Sarlat is full of fine architecture, it is nice to wander around the lanes and maybe stop at a café for coffee or a glass of something stronger and watch time go by. Restaurants are everywhere, from the ordinary 12 euros for a 3 course menu, to Michelin star quality. The local restaurant (one minute's walk from the house) serves good quality food with good service, but our local best restaurant (10 minutes in the car) is well worth a visit - and it won't break the bank! The light wines of Bergerac and the heavier wines of Bordeaux and Cahors are readily available at prices to suit everyone's pocket. Travel Information
