Manor House With Heated Pool, Golf and Tennis Court
Near Biron on the Dordogne border, South West France
Manor: 5 bedrooms, sleeps 13. Guest Cottages: 1 bedroom, each sleeps 2/3. Together sleeps 16/18.

Le Manoir de Montauriol

Built in 1670, the Manoir is situated close to the Dordogne border, near the village of Biron with its beautiful chateau perched on the hill above. It lies in 23 hectares of natural woodland with wild deer, cultivated pines, lawns and open spaces. A stream runs through the valley and none of the land has had any artificial fertilisers or hunting for the past forty years.

Montauriol is an ideal setting for the pleasures of wining and dining. A barbecue and a glass of wine overlooking the pigeonnier, en famille around the kitchen table or, for special occasions, (a birthday, a marriage, a truly traditional Christmas), a feast in the dining hall.

However, Montauriol's history doesn't mean that it hasn't got 21st century comforts. There is an all weather swimming pool (13.5 x 5 metres) with a fish shaped children's pool (4 x 8 metres), a two-hole putting green, a shady boules pitch and an all weather tennis court. There are games in the barn like table tennis and table football and an outside children's play area, plus all modern conveniences, such as satellite television, telephone, fax and central heating, to make it comfortable at any time of year.

The Manor consists of three separate houses, all comfortably furnished with country antiques, which gives them a truly French ambience. The Manoir itself can accommodate 13 including children, the Guesthouse has a bedroom on the ground floor, which sleeps 2/3 people and, a short distance from the house, is a Cottage, which also sleeps 2/3 people. Montauriol can only be taken as a whole in July and August, but the houses can be taken individually during other months.

There is an English speaking couple living on the estate, responsible for pool and garden maintenance, who are always happy to give you the benefit of their local knowledge.

The manor house has a living room with a large fireplace, a sitting room area, two dining areas, television and video, a CD player and a telephone. The kitchen is fully equipped with a fridge, microwave and dishwasher and there is a separate utility room with a washing machine and dryer, a second drinks fridge and storage space. There is also a downstairs bathroom with a separate wc. Upstairs is very large room with a fireplace, a DVD and lots of children's toys that is often used as a dining room for large groups, or as a games room.

The house has five bedrooms in total, three with an extra large double bed, a twin room and a large children's bedroom decorated in Harry Potter style with three single beds and a small double bed, plus a washbasin. The house has three bathrooms with bath or shower and three separate wc's in total.

Around the Manoir is a large garden with garden furniture, barbecue, deck chairs, parasols, a games room in the barn and a children's pool and play area. A chef and other staff are available on request.

The Guesthouse has a large open plan living room/bedroom with a kitchen area, which opens onto a large terrace. The kitchen is simple but well equipped with a cooker, fridge, microwave and a dining table for four people.

There are twin beds and in a separate corner a single bed. There is also a bathroom area with a shower and a separate wc. The terrace has garden furniture, a barbecue, deck chairs and a parasol.

The Cottage is cosy and well maintained with an open plan living room and kitchen opening onto the terrace. The kitchen is equipped with a gas cooker, microwave and fridge and has a dining table that seats three people. The bedroom has two single beds and there is a shower room. Above the bathroom is a low loft with a single bed suitable for a child.

Outside is a large private garden with garden furniture, a barbeque and parasols.

The Area

Biron (4 kms) has essential shops and there are pretty medieval towns and villages within reach, which have all shops and markets on different days of the week with a good choice of restaurants ranging from small family run ones to gastronomic. This is good cycling country and there are riding stables nearby, canoe hire bases on the rivers Lot and Dordogne and a good golf course at Castelnaud de Gratecambe (20 kms).

Villeneuve-sur-Lot, Monflanquin, Monpazier, Sarlat and Domme, in particular are worth a visit. The vineyards and wines of Bergerac, Monbazillac, Pécharmant, and Cahors are all within reach. Then there are the châteaux of Biron, the great fortress castle of Bonaguil, or Gavaudun and many others. Rocamadour, dominated by its château and built against the cliff face of a gorge, was a great place of pilgrimage in the 12th century and has some extraordinary shrines built into the rock.
