19th Century Provençal Mas with Pool
Near Bollène, just north of Orange and Avignon, South France
4 bedrooms, sleeps 10/12 people

Tauleigne

This lovely old Mas is situated on the south side of a hill, amongst thirty two acres of oaks surrounded by a plateau, on top of which stands the ruins of the ancient Château de Chabrière. It has a great feeling of peace and quiet and there are lots of paths that take you in all directions to fine views across the Vaucluse countryside towards the Montmirail peaks and Mont Ventoux.

Under an hour from Orange and Avignon, the Mas is 7 kms from Bollène, which has all necessary shops plus two supermarkets, and 6 kms from the little village of Saint-Restitut, which has a tourist office and a pleasant restaurant called Truinas.

The front of the house has two entrances, one leading to the living room, the other to the kitchen. These two rooms are on the ground floor along with the dining room and are all interconnecting. The small windows are typical of Provençal houses and help to keep the house cool during the summer.

The kitchen has a very old mantle to the left of the entrance and an ancient stone sink, preserved in its original place. It's equipped with all modern conveniences, for making simple or extravagant meals and includes an oven and hob, dishwasher, a chopping block, work surfaces and a kitchen table and chairs.

The living room, in the centre of the house, has stone walls, beamed ceilings and a fireplace. Furnished with sofas and armchairs, it is a pleasantly cool place to relax in and there is a library of books, including children's books and a television. Under the stairs leading to the second floor, is a wc and a storage cupboard. The dining room also has lovely old stone walls and a very large dining table.

Upstairs are three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The first bedroom is the largest, painted in the clear colours of the Midi. It has wood floors and looks over the garden and pool. There is room for a cot if needed. Just down the hallway is a bathroom with a bath/shower, decorated in white with orange flower designs. Further along is the second double bedroom and beyond that a wc and then a tiled bathroom with bath/shower. The third bedroom is a children's room with two single beds.

Stairs from the hallway lead into an attic dormitory, divided by a wardrobe, with two single beds on the right and two to the left. Two of these have a pull out bed, so that six can be accommodated.

In front of the house is a lawn scattered with laurel and lavender, santolina and rosemary and a little oak tree wood, which provides shady spots to lie and read while the children play in the pool and where you can also eat outside in natural surroundings. Next to the house is a barbecue area and there are several terraces. Outside lighting allows you to sit out late and listen to the sound of the cigales. The pool house has a washing machine, a refrigerator and a wc.

The Area

From the middle of June until the end of July, one of the most beautiful sights are the lavender fields and to walk or cycle through them is a joy.

The main markets in Carpentras and Orange, Pont-Saint-Esprit and Malaucènes, where you can find a feast of fresh local vegetables and fruits, cheeses, fish and flowers, are full of the colours, scents and sounds of Provence. Many of the villages also have markets and you can often find a restaurant or a cafe, where you can relax over a cool drink or have a long lunch in the shade. Isle-sur-Sorgues, has a vast antiques market every Sunday.

Within a reasonable drive you can visit many of the wine producing villages; Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Rasteau, Beaumes-de-Venise and close to Mont Ventoux, Gigondas, amongst others. Château de Suz-la-Rousse is the home of the wine university here.

The spectacular town of Orange has many good shops and restaurants and its worth taking time to also visit the Roman Theatre and the impressive Arc de Triomphe. Avignon also has good shopping, some excellent restaurants and is pleasant to walk around. The massive Palais des Papes is unmissable and in July, there is a big Arts and Theatre Festival.

The beaches on the coast (Le-Grau-du-Roi and La Grande Motte) and the lovely Verdon mountain range (good walking) are an hour's drive from here; the Alps are two hour's away (skiing).
