Le Domaine de la Fontaine
This charming 17th century Périgordian house is set in three hectares a kilometre from the village of Vergt, which has all essential shops and is the centre for the strawberry farms in this area. There is a greater selection of good shops and restaurants in Sarlat and Périgueux (20 kms) and in Bergerac, surrounded by the vineyards of Monbazillac and Péchamant (30 kms), while Bordeaux is 120 kms from here.
La Fontaine enjoys a particularly peaceful environment, with lovely views over meadows and woods, where you can relax and dream undisturbed. It has been restored with great care using traditional materials and is comfortably furnished with period country furniture. The Pigeonnier overlooks the valley and is a wonderful spot for a siesta! There is a hammock on the terrace and a barbecue. The barn has a games room with table tennis and table football and various children's games. There is also a wc and a fridge for cold drinks. The swimming pool (12 x 6 metres) has tables, chairs and sunloungers and a shower placed behind a pretty wrought iron screen.
The main house has a large kitchen/dining room equipped amongst other things with oven and microwave, dishwasher, fridge and a table that can seat twelve people. There is a laundry with washing machine and dryer and a fridge/freezer. The bathroom has a bath, shower and two washbasins with a separate wc, and opens directly onto a terrace. There is also a sauna. The first floor has a large, pleasant living room with a fireplace and satellite television, video and music. There is also a big double bedroom with a fireplace and a splendid bathroom with a free standing bath and marble washbasin. The second floor has two large and comfortable bedrooms, both with a double and a single bed, plus a washbasin and wc. The pool is sometimes shared with other guests who may be staying in the gite, except when the Domaine is taken as a whole. The gîte is attached to the main house but is totally independent. It has an open plan living room with a mezzanine with a double bed, a bathroom with shower and a small kitchen with a fridge, sink and hot plates and washing machine with a big window overlooking the valley. There is a small private terrace and garden. Ideal for two, it may be taken on its own or with a double annex bedroom close by to accommodate 4 people. The games room and pool are occasionally shared. The annex is a double bedroom with a shower room and its own private terrace.
The Area
Within easy reach is a lake where you can fish, riding stables and all around many enchanting walks through lovely countryside and secret valleys, and a good number of restaurants. There is a good golf course 20 minutes away and at Trémolat (25 kms), there's a large nautical base where you can hire canoes or do some rowing. The Dordogne is one of the most beautiful regions in France; the hills and valleys, woods and vineyards, walnut groves, fruit orchards, maize and sunflowers and the towering châteaux, red-tiled villages and ancient towns, scatter a landscape steeped in history. The region is famous for foie gras, duck, truffles, wine and cheese, long hot days, warm summer evenings and friendly hospitality. Travel Information
