Villa with private pool in Provence South of France
Mollans-sur-Ouvèze, near Vaison-la-Romaine, in the Drome
3 bedrooms, sleeps up to 6 people
L'Ouillière
Our villa is quietly situated just outside the village of Mollans-sur-Ouvèze on a hillside with wide open views towards Mont Ventoux in the distance. The garden is planted with olives, figs and vines, scented with lavender, juniper and rosemary. The swimming pool has mosaic tiles and Roman steps.
Mollans lies on the River Ouvèze and has all the charm of an old Provence village. Local shops include two boulangeries, a small grocery store, as well as two bars and several restaurants. Some of the old Côtes du Rhône wine villages like Gigondas and Beaumes, Laudun and Châteauneuf-du-Pape are within easy driving distance. Most have markets on different days of the week, full of fabrics and pottery, fresh fruit and vegetables, olives and cheeses and shady cafes and restaurants. Vaison-la-Romaine is about 10 km from here; Carpentras, Orange, Nîmes and Avignon are within an hour. The villa has been designed around an open plan living room with a beamed ceiling, which has a dining area, television and a kitchen equipped with an oven and hob, dishwasher, fridge/freezer and coffee maker amongst other things.
The three bedrooms, one double and two twin, and the bathroom, are on the east side of the villa. One of the bedrooms opens directly onto the terrace. On the west side of the villa is a large garage with a shower room and wc, plus a washing machine. The villa is well insulated and has electric heating and an open fireplace, which makes it pleasant at any time of year round. There is also garden furniture and a well equipped barbecue.
The Area
Within a reasonable drive are the wildly beautiful and relatively unknown Gorges du Toulourenc and for those who enjoy walking or riding, the whole of Mont Ventoux to roam over. Ventoux also has a good ski station for winter sports. Vaison-la-Romaine has a variety of shops, several restaurants and a marvellous market that takes over the whole of the centre of town every Tuesday. The Roman part of Vaison, includes a 1st century theatre, though smaller than those in Arles and Orange and the two thousand year old bridge over the river is still in use. Nyons is famous for its olive oil and for making lavender essences, Buis-les-Baronnies is the centre for limes and truffles. The Cistercian Abbey of Sénanque, founded in 1148, is in a beautiful valley setting and worth a stop. Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, where the source of the Sorgue river dramatically gushes out from deep within the hills as a full blown river and Gordes, one of several lovely Luberon villages, are also worth a detour.
