Le Vieil Bauge, near Angers, in the heart of Anjou, Central France
6 bedrooms with bathrooms
Le Logis de Poellier
The Logis is quietly situated in the countryside, half an hour from Angers and Saumur, near the village of Le Vieil Bauge. Grouped around an attractive 16th century house, the six chambres d'hôtes are in two of the cottage buildings alongside it. Apart from a generous breakfast, a home cooked dinner made from fresh local ingredients is is also available on request.
Bauge, 6 kms from here, has a choice of restaurants as well as cultural and sporting facilities. This is great riding country and the heart of the Anjou vineyards as well with many opportunities to taste some of the wines. The bedrooms all have bathrooms with a shower and each of the cottages have a pleasant living room with television and video, books and games and a kitchen area equipped with a fridge, microwave and hotplate, where you can make children's meals, hot drinks and light snacks. Three of the rooms are in the little Logis. Sonate, on the ground floor, has twin beds. Both upstairs bedrooms are suitable for a family. Concerto has a double bed and twin beds, Prélude has a double and a single bed and its own entrance.
Rapsodie and Melodie are double bedrooms with private bathrooms in the Chapelle cottage. The bottom floor of the cottage has a trogladyte living room with a small kitchenette at the end of which, is the entrance to the old subterranean caves that run under the courtyard. Toccata is a separate studio bedroom with a double bed and a mezzanine with two single beds, again useful for a family. It has a bathroom with shower and a separate wc and a corner kitchenette with hotplates and a fridge. A washing machine and dryer is also available for guests staying for more than a night. Please feel free to use the courtyard to sit outside and to wander anywhere you like in the grounds. The Area
Eight kilometers away is an international standard golf course and a lake where anyone can spend the day fishing. Bauge has a swimming pool and tennis courts that are open to everyone, there are riding stables in the forest and a short distance from us is a play park, which children love. The castle at Angers looms up on approach, long before you reach the town. It has seventeen bastion towers and massive outer and inner defence walls, though now there are gardens in the moat and a herd of fallow deer. Many works of art and a unique collection of tapestries are displayed there. The town has many fine old buildings dating from the 15th century with timbered and carved overhanging storeys, which shade the narrow streets from the sun, and shops, markets and a good choice of restaurants. Nearby there are several châteaux to visit, such as Le Plessis-Macé, Bois-Mautboucher, Percher and Magnanne. Serrant, to the west on the N23 has one of the loveliest château in the Loire. South of Angers are several places like Gennes, Rochfort-sur-Loire and Chemillé, where you can taste some of the wines. This is traditionally great horse country and Saumur is home of the famous Cadre Noir riding school founded by Louis XV. The Musée de la Cavalerie there, traces the history of the cavalry and you can often watch the riders and horses in training for one of their spectacular displays of riding skills. Saumer also has a château with towers at each corner, bell turrets and ornate gable windows that gives it a special charm. St-Hilaire-St-Florent, just outside Saumur is one of the best places to taste Saumur wines (best with lunch) and there is also a quirky museum there, devoted to wild mushrooms. The national riding school is next door to it. Rochmenier has an underground country museum showing how the troglodytes (cave dwellers) lived until quite recently. Fontevraud l'Abbaye is an 11th century monastery with five separate parts - for monks, nuns, lepers and the infirm and, for repentant women. It also houses the bones of both English and French kings.
