Two Charming Traditional Cottages in Southern Brittany
Erdeven, in the Morbihan area, 5 minutes from the beach
2 and 3 bedrooms, sleeping 5 and 6 people

Les Gîtes du Lisse

The traditional Breton granite cottages are in the little hamlet of Lisse, just over a kilometre from Erdeven in the lovely Morbihan area of Southern Brittany on the north west coast of France. The beaches are an easy walk or bike ride away at Kerhilio, Kerminihy and Kérouriec, 2 km from here. Erdeven has a good choice shops and several restaurants. The beautiful racing yachts belonging to Loïc Perron, Francis Joyon and Frank Camas are moored in the marina at La Trinité-sur-Mer (14 km). Carnac is 6 km from here.

Both cottages are entirely independent of one another and have been lovingly restored in keeping with their original character with rose terracotta tiled floors, oak beams and white walls and have a cosy, comfortable feeling about them. The interiors have been decorated in an original style with well being in mind and have a number of lithographs and photographs of Brittany, sail boats and of others of countries we have visited. They each have a garden full of plants and flowers, surrounded by a little stone wall. The hamlet is very quiet, so children can run about freely and safely.

Gite du Lisse has a warm, convivial open plan living room and kitchen area equipped with everything needed, including and oven and hob, microwave, fridge and other things such as a coffee maker, kettle and toaster. A highchair and dishes for a baby can be provided and there is a dining table and chairs. The salon area has a sofa and two armchairs, a coffee table, television and video. The bathroom was inspired by a trip to Morocco and has a large shower and vanity unit, a wc, a cupboard and a washing machine.

A security gate for children can be fitted at the top of the stairs, which lead to a double bedroom on the mezzanine. The second bedroom, decorated in a marine style, has twin beds that can be made into a double, plus a single bunk bed like ones you find on a boat and also has a bookcase of children's books and black and white photographs of the sea and sail boats on the walls.

The garden is full of rhododendrons and camellias, rosemary and thyme and is bordered by a little stone wall with a wooden gate. There is parking space for one car and a pleasant stone terrace with garden furniture and a barbeque and sunbeds on the lawn.

Gite An Héol, in Breton, means the sun, and the cottage is indeed light and sunny with all modern comforts. The main ground floor room has a salon area with sofa and chairs around a fireplace with a wood burning stove, there just for pleasure against a background of central heating, a coffee table and television. The kitchen area is fully equipped and has a large dining table that seats six.

The first door leading from the main room opens into a bedroom that reflects the sea and has a large double bed with an en suite toilet and wash basin. This room would be ideal for those with reduced mobility. The second door opens into the bathroom, painted in purple and white, which has a shower, a vanity unit, wc, a large cupboard and a washing machine. Stairs, which can have a security gate fitted, lead to the other two bedrooms, one double, one twin.

The large kitchen window opens out onto the terrace surrounded by a stone wall with a wooden gate. A small stone built hut to one side of the terrace can be used to store bicycles and other equipment. The garden has a lawn and a variety of plants and flowers. Sunbeds are provided and there is private parking.

The Area

There are facilities here for everything associated with the sea; sailing, wind surfing, sea fishing and kayaking. Within a radius of 5 kms there are riding stables, tennis courts and a golf course. From the Quiberon peninsular (20 kms) there are ferry trips to the offshore islands of Belle Ile en Mer, Hoedic and Houat and lots of pretty ports along the coast.

The Gulf of Morbihan (30 km) is well known for its unspoilt beauty and covers an area of over a thousand square miles with over forty uninhabited islands, which can be visited, wildlife reserves, ornithological parks and prehistoric megaliths.

The Breton people are Celtic with their own unique legends, traditions and language and are well known for their natural hospitality and friendliness. From Spring until the Autumn, a succession of local fetes and festivals are held all over Brittany, which you bound to come across. The beautiful city of Vannes is worth a visit and there are many towns and villages of historical interest and numerous restaurants and cafes to choose from to suit all tastes and pockets, ranging from classical to seafood and crepes. There is lots of local information at the cottages.
