Comfortable Bed and Breakfast in Southern France
Villefranche de Conflent, 45 minutes from Perpignan, in the Languedoc
3 rooms with bathrooms. With pool.

Casa Penalolen

The lovely old town of Villefranche de Conflent, lies in the Têt valley between the coast and the eastern Pyrenees Mountains, which rise above the Mediterranean in the South of France. Villefranche is 5 kms from Prades, which became well known as the home of the classical guitarist Pablo Casals and which celebrates this each year with a big music festival at the end of July and beginning of August. The beaches along the Emerald coast, the ancient Catalan town of Perpignan and a little further along, the border across to Spain are all within an hour or so from here.

Set beside a river, five minutes from Villefranche, the house is solidly built of local granite and marble and has three comfortable and pleasantly furnished rooms with private bathrooms.

There are also two salons with television available to our guests and a dining room, where breakfast is served, which opens onto a terrace with views across to the old city walls of Villefranche. There are sunbeds around the swimming pool and table tennis and a pétanque pitch in the garden.

In the evenings we like to offer our guests an aperitif before they go into Villefranche for dinner. The restaurants there range from traditional, to typically Catalan, to gastronomic. We are also, on request, happy to prepare a barbecue in the garden, if you don't feel like going out.

The Area

You can easily get into the mountains from here and walk or drive for hours through unspoiled country full of wildlife, where life has changed little. From the station in Villefranche, the little yellow train takes you on a rail journey through the mountain peaks and valleys, past small villages, mountain streams and waterfalls, through tunnels and over an aqueduct. The road by car down from Mont-Louis in the Cerdagne to Villefranche is an exciting serpentine decent that demands concentration and patience.

The spa town of Vernet-les-Bains is a base from which to visit the magnificently situated Abbaye de St-Martin, whose typically Catalan square and crenelated belfry, perches impressively, high on a rocky crag that the later Cathar fortress builders must have envied. You can take a jeep up to it from Vernet, but the moderately stiff half hour climb is much more satisfying. Towering above St-Martin is the Canigou, to many, the most majestic peak in the Pyrenees.

Prades has a colourful market every Tuesday morning full of early fruit and vegetables from Roussillon and a good day out will also take you into the Roussillon vineyards, which can be visited to taste the wines. Marcevol, about 20 minutes by car, has a golf course and you can also go white water rafting and climbing, 15 minutes away towards Marquixanes.
