Four Country Gites near St Cirq-la-Popie in the Lot
Saint Géry, 20 kms from Cahors in South West France
2, 3 or 4 bedrooms, sleeping up to 5/7 people. With pool.
Les Figuiers de Louna
The gites are situated on a hillside property above a small hamlet, 300 meters from the Lot river, in the midst of vines, woods and sunflowers. Three of the gites are in a villa with a pool, the other more traditional gite, is an independent part of our house next door. The village of Saint Géry, 2 kms away has essential shops and a market on Sunday mornings, where you can find delicious local goat's cheese and some of the Cahors wines. Cahors itself is 20 km from here and has a large selection of shops, including supermarkets, a choice of restaurants, cafés and a lively market on Saturday mornings in the old part of town.
All the gites are light and airy with a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere and each has its own private terrace overlooking the garden. There are lovely open views of the Lot Valley and there is a play area for children, a barbecue and a boules pitch. Pierre Ensoleillée is in the wing of our 19th century vineyard house, restored with care so as to preserve the original country charm of the stone and brick walls and beams and is completely private and independent. Wisteria clad stone steps lead up to the entrance, which opens into a large open plan living room with a dining area that has a large sun room overlooking the garden and pool. The fitted kitchen area opens onto another part of the south facing terrace. There are two bedrooms, one double and one with a double and a single bed. There is a bathroom with shower and the sofa bed in the living room can also be used if needed.
Nid d'étoiles is on the first floor of the newly built villa next door. The main living room leads onto a balcony overlooking the pool and the fitted kitchen is equipped with an oven and hob, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine and fridge and has a coffee maker and toaster. The two double bedrooms are quietly situated at the back, one overlooking fig trees, the other opening onto a second terrace. The bathroom has a shower, two washbasins and a heated towel rail. There is also a mezzanine area with extra single beds if needed. Aube sur la Vallée is on the East side of the villa and has wonderful views across the valley from the terrace, towards the glittering waters of the River Lot in the distance, which can be seen through the woods in Spring and Autumn before the leaves come out. The main living room is light and spacious, furnished with a mixture of traditional and new furniture. The kitchen is fully equipped and includes a dishwasher and washing machine, toaster and coffee maker. There are two double bedrooms and a shower room, plus a large mezzanine area with a sofa and television and two bedroom areas with single beds and a second shower room. Although these two gites are independent of one another, taken together, they would also be ideal for two families or a group of friends. Individually, they are ideal for couples in the Spring, early Summer and Autumn months. Rêve des Papillons is on the ground floor of the villa in front of the swimming pool. Bright and spacious, it is surrounded by oleanders that attract numerous butterflies. The living room and kitchen are kept cool by the covered terrace. There is a double bedroom and a separate room leading off the main room that acts as a television room and play room or as an extra bedroom. Two further double bedrooms with en suite shower rooms leading off the main room also have their own access from the terrace. Outside are terraces, lawns and garden furniture, a barbecue and a fenced pool.
The Area
St Cirq-la-Popie, one of the prettiest villages in the Midi, is 5 kms from here. It has a beautiful setting high above the left bank of the river and has always been popular with artists and artisans. The narrow streets wind up towards the old château and Gothic church and if you wander around the back, the view is dizzying! An easy drive from here are the Pech-Merle Caves, one of the most interesting of all the prehistoric caves in the South West. There are several large intercommunicating chambers full of amazing stalactites and stalagmites in a range of different colours, from a frosty sparkle to a deep glowing red. The eerie beauty of these vast subterranean rooms are believed to have led Man to use the caves as a kind of temple, to which he added his own superb drawings of bison, mammoths, horses and deer, signed in places by an open fingered hand.
