Chambres d'Hôtes Bed and Breakfast in an 18th Century House
Thoronet, 45 minutes from Saint Tropez, in the Var, South of France
Plus 2 independent gites with 1 bedroom, sleeping 2 people. With pool.
Bastide des Hautes Moures
Our Provençal home, close to Thoronet, is surrounded by countryside and has three hundred years of memories caught between its old stone walls. Ancient patinas and subtle colours, the scent of lavender and polish, warm sun on honey coloured stone and a cool interior give the house a great sense of peace and harmony. In the late autumn and early spring months, its position in the folds of a hillside and the thickness of the walls protects, warms and comforts.
The bastide is little over 4 kms from Thoronet, 45 kms from Aix-en-Provence, Saint Tropez and beaches and about 30 minutes from Fréjus and St Raphaël. We have here, three large bedrooms with private bathrooms and two self-contained gites for those who prefer to be more independent.
The Chambres d'Hôtes, Arlequin, Lavandin and Oasis, are spacious, comfortably furnished and decorated in the vibrant colours of Provence. The first bedroom is a melange of reds and yellows, the second is a fresh mixture of yellow and lavender blues and the third bedroom is decorated in the earthy terracotta reds of parts of this region. The bathrooms are separated from the bedroom by hand made wrought iron doors with translucent stained glass. Each bedroom has television. The suite has a canopied double bed, a sitting room area, television and a bathroom with a separate wc. There is an Italian influenced dining room where breakfast is served and where dinner is available on request. It leads to a games room and library and through to two quiet, comfortable sitting rooms that overlook the salt water swimming pool and the garden. On cooler evenings, a fire is lit in the huge fireplace in the library. The Pool Cottage is as charming and comfortable as the main house. There is an open plan living room and kitchen area, decorated with linen pictures of flowers and scenes of Provence. The kitchen is equipped with a fridge and an oven and hob and the salon has television. Windows open onto a terrace and a peaceful private garden. The salon leads through to a small boudoir and a wonderfully romantic bedroom with transparent curtains draped around the bed, where one can drift off to sleep to the song of the cigales. Between these two rooms is a bathroom with shower. Gite Anis is a private part of the main house and has a double bedroom, a living room area with a kitchenette, a small dressing room and a shower room. At each side of the main house is a terrace and lawns with garden furniture and sunbeds. There are also quiet spots under the shade of a group of ancient trees in front of the bastide. The salt water swimming pool measures 15 x 7 metres with a depth of 3.20 metres. The Area
For golfers, there are at least a dozen golf courses within a reasonable drive; at St Endréol, Vallescure or Beauvallon or at Saint Tropez. Cyclists have numerous routes through 350 hectares of wooded countryside around us. Walkers can enjoy the beauty of the Var on the way perhaps, to the ancient Abbaye du Thoronet, or to various local villages like Le Cannet des Maures, which has lovely views of the Maures hills. The beach at Fréjus is the nearest, a 35 km drive from here, or at Ramatuelle (the beaches around Saint Tropez), 45 kms away. On the way there is Sainte Maxime, which has a variety of lively evening entertainment for all ages and a reputation for good food. There are also several talented restaurateurs that are certainly worth at least one visit, such as Bruno at Lorgues, the Gorges de Pennenfort at Callas or, at the Abbaye de la Celle. You can find some great wines at some of our vineyards too, like Vin de Sainte Roselyne, Château d'Astros. The spectacular Gorges de Verdon are just over an hour away, where there is good hang-gliding, rafting and fishing. The beautiful Château d'Entracasteaux was first built in the 11th century then added to in the 17th and 18th centuries. Its modest, gifted owner has over the years, collected many fine antiques. There are also several marvellous markets; at Cotignac in front of the church, at Lorgues all along the main street and a smaller one at Salernes, though perhaps the most popular. Travel Information
