Paris Apartment Near Montmartre
Between the Gard du Nord and the Sacré Cœur
1 bedroom: ideal for 1 or 2 people, it can sleep up to 4

Apartment / L'appartement

An ideal base for one or two in the centre of the city, the apartment is in a 19th century building, a 10 minute walk from Montmartre and the Gare du Nord, terminal for the Eurostar link between Paris and London. Shops, cafés, restaurants and everyday life are on the doorstep; the métro is 3 minutes away.

The apartment is on the ground floor of the apartment building and in common with many such buildings in Paris, it opens onto a quiet inner courtyard away from the noise of the street. Comfortably furnished and provided with everything needed, it has a living room with a sofa bed, a double bedroom, a small bathroom with shower and a kitchen equipped with a dishwasher and washing machine, oven and hob, microwave, fridge/freezer, plus table and chairs. Ideal for one or two, it can accommodate up to four people.

The salon has a sofa and armchairs, a bookcase, television and radio. The bedroom has a double bed, bedside tables and lamps, an armoire and a second television.

The Area

In the old days, Montmartre was associated with writers and avant-garde intellectuals who frequented the cabarets, where poets and satirists provided entertainment a cut above the popular café concert shows beloved by Toulouse-Lautrec. The celebrated Au Lapin Agile still puts on acts incorporating songs, comedy routines and poetry readings and is worth dropping into, to catch a moment of essential Paris. At the turn of the 20th century, Montmartre was the birthplace of modern painting and local artists knew that they could count on the old patron at Au Lapin to stand them drinks in exchange for a picture or a song. Customers included Fauvres, (Dufy and Derain) and Cubists, (Picasso and Braque would come over from the Bateau-Lavoir), along with Appollinaire, Max Jacob and Modigliani, before he emigrated to Montparnasse.

Today Montmartre still has a village atmosphere with winding streets and cosy squares that take you perhaps to rue des Trois Frères, a popular place to go for an evening drink. It leads to place Emile Goudeau, whose old houses, steps and wrought iron street-lights are particularly evocative. Then to the Sacré Coeur with its massive white dome standing high above the city, or to Montmartre Cemetery, which has many distinguished residents and is a curiously romantic place with high stone walls and graceful trees arching over the gravestones.
