Pretty Little Provencal House with pool
Saint Rémy de Provence, near Avignon in the South of France
2 bedrooms, sleeps 4/5 people
Lou Badabeu
Surrounded by a colourful Mediterranean garden, olive groves and cypress trees within sight of Alpilles hills, the house is just over a kilometre from the centre of Saint Rémy de Provence. This is the countryside that inspired painters like Cézanne, Gaugin and van Gogh, who loved its brilliant colours and special light, its warm air scented with drifts of thyme and rosemary.
St Rémy is an elegant little town that has attracted artists of all kinds through the years, together with those who prefer life at a more relaxed pace. Market day is every Wednesday, which brings everyone out, to shop, discuss the merits of one particular kind of olive over another and to sit with friends at a café and catch up with the week's news. There is also a choice of good restaurants and shops for every day needs, so that it's easy to do the daily baguette run, perhaps combined with an early morning café crème. The house is typically Provencal, open, cool and designed as much for outside living with north and south facing terraces. It has an open plan living room and kitchen, furnished with a sofa and chairs and a country dining table. The kitchen is fully equipped and includes a dishwasher, an oven and hob, microwave and toaster amongst other things. The laundry room has a washing machine and dryer and the house is fully centrally heated for the winter months. There is also a gas fired barbecue.
Upstairs are two bedrooms, one with a double bed and cot that has an ensuite bathroom with bath. The second bedroom is larger with a double bed and a single bed. This bedroom also has a bathroom with shower and there is a separate wc. One of the double beds can be replaced with twin beds, if preferred. The Area
St Rémy has a small museum in a lovely old building with a courtyard, which has some things that commemorate the 16th century doctor and astrologer Nostradamus, who was born here and whose prophesies still fascinate many people. There is also an archaeological museum with finds from Glanum, an important Roman site a mile or so out of town. From there it's a short drive up into the Alpilles and a completely different world. The old village of Les Baux perches on the cliff top and has marvellous views of the valley below, best seen in the cool of the evening when the sun is going down. Like Provence, both Arles and Avignon need time to really see; Avignon for its southern cosmopolitan air, smart shops and restaurants, festivals and magnificent Pope's Palace, Arles for its charm, its association with van Gogh and its treasure house of Roman remains. Those who prefer the country can get to the Camargue, the vineyards around Mont Ventoux and the beautiful Luberon to walk or cycle, in less than an hour. Travel Information
