Beautiful Country Bed and Breakfast in Normandy
Avernes St Gourgon, an hour from Le Havre and Caen
2 double rooms and a family suite
L'Orangerie
The Orangerie is a classical 18th century red brick country house estate between Vimoutiers and Orbec, near the little hamlet of Avernes St Gourgon, close to Le Sap. The house has a private wood and is surrounded by lawns planted with shrubs and box and is an ideal base for a restful few days break.
This part of Normandy is immensly varied and beautiful and has a wealth of architectural and historical associations. The area is dotted with colourful manor houses, quite different from those in other parts of France, lively and fashionable towns like Deauville along the coast and imbeccably bred horses, which embellish the countryside. We have been welcoming guests into our home for several years now to enjoy, we hope, its peaceful and relaxed comfort as much as we do. It is especially ideal for those who like to ride, as we can accommodate horses in fully equipped stables, so that they can be cared for in luxury. We also welcome classic car clubs and enthusiasts and musicians (there is a grand piano in the salon). The best way to start the day is with a good breakfast, which is prepared in the kitchen decorated with Laura Ashley prints and served in the dining room. The kitchen is also available to guests who wish to prepare picnics to take out for the day, or light lunches and suppers to enjoy in the garden or meals for young children and babies. The bedrooms are comfortably furnished with old family country furniture and the bathrooms are provided with towels, soaps and shampoos.
There are four bedrooms, two double rooms with bathroom or shower room and a double room and a family bedroom with three beds that share a bathroom next door. There are a number of restaurants locally, notably in Orbec and Le Sap and we will be glad to recommend some to you. The Area
This is marvellous cycling and riding country and there are endless place to walk through countryside heavy with blossom or apples and thick with bright green pastures and grazing cattle, which produce the rich creamy milk that goes into making Camembert and Pont L'Evéque cheese. To appreciate the intimate charm of the countryside though, it is best to take the country roads to see tucked away manor houses, cottages with flowers planted in thatched roofs, and noisy farmyards. There are several riding stables close by where you can hire horses for an hour or for the day. Of the villages and manors: Beaumesnil, Saint Germain du Livet, or Mézidon, Canon and Château de Vandeuvre are worth a detour. An hour away along the Côte Fleurie on whose long sandy beaches the fashion for bathing was born in the 19th century, Deauville reigns supreme. Its neo rustic villas, smart shops and night life attract many people who come for the yearling sales and racing, the regattas and to play roulette, golf, polo or tennis. Travel Information
