The Apartment
The 19th century Haussmann apartment building is in the Quartier de l'Europe not far from the old Opéra, about 15/20 minutes walk from the Tuileries, the Place de la Concord, the Louvre and the Champs-Elysées. The apartment is on the 5th floor, accessed via a lift or carpeted staircase and has an entry phone that can be used either from the street or from the lift. The building has a quiet interior courtyard garden.
The apartment is centrally heated and furnished with attention to detail in order to make it as pleasant and welcoming as possible. The entrance hall of the apartment has a window looking onto the interior courtyard and leads to a living room, the main bedroom, a second double bedroom, a study bedroom and the kitchen. The balconies have garden furniture and potted plants in summer. The salon is large with polished wood floors and three double door windows opening onto a balcony overlooking the street. There are two marble fireplaces with an overmantle mirror and bookshelves at either end of the room. The furnishings are comfortable and include two leather sofas, a dining table that can seat eight people, several other tables, lamps, television, video and a hi-fi system.
The two main bedrooms are at either end of the hall and have wood floors with mats, a fireplace with an overmantal mirror, and windows opening onto the balcony. They each double beds, bedside tables, wardrobes and chests of drawers, a television and hi-fi system. The study bedroom has a double futon bed that acts as a sofa during the day, an easy chair, a desk, shelves and an armoire. A spare bed can be added if necessary. The bathroom has a bath with shower attachment, washbasin, cupboards, towel rails and spot lights and a separate wc. It communicates directly with one of the the main bedrooms but also has an entrance from the hall. The kitchen is at the end of the hallway and is equipped with everything needed, including a dishwasher and washing machine, two fridges, a freezer, microwave and hob. There is a table for four and a small round table for two. There is parking about 100 metres from the apartment and it is close to four metro stations, Europe, Liège, Rome and Place de Clichy that will connect you with most parts of Paris and beyond. The stations at Saint Lazare and Opéra are also close by. The Area
Along the Boulevard Haussmann are some of the big department stores, Galeries Lafayette and Au Printemps amongst others and near the Madeleine are the dazzling shop windows of Fauchon. The Opéra is an architectural extravaganza and evokes the mood of opera at its very grandest. Outside it's covered with sculptures depicting dance and music, right up to the copper dome, topped by Apollo. The interior is a treasure trove of of frescoes, sculptures, grand staircases, marble, gold leaf and precious stones. It's not hard to see why the legend of the phantom of the opera started here. The elegant interior of the Café de la Paix overlooking the place de l'Opéra still gives a sense of stepping back into the 19th century. Arguably the greatest museum in the world, the Louvre needs time, its sheer size and the quality of the collections means that one could spend weeks if not months wandering through the galleries. You can quite easily walk from here across the Seine to the the Musée d'Orsay, which is a work of art in itself. Near the Louvre are the Tuileries gardens and the Palais-Royal and its delightful gardens, and the rue de Rivoli with its graceful arcades and shops, leading to the place de la Concorde and the Champs Elysées.
