Apartments In An Ancient Languedoc Priory
Pézenas near Béziers, in the Herault, South France
1, 2, or 3 bedrooms, sleeping 2, 4 or 6 people.
Prieuré de Saint Martial
The Priory is situated in a peaceful park amongst a sea of vines, woods and fields in the beautiful Languedoc countryside, 5 kms from Pézenas and 20 kms from Béziers and the Mediterranean coast. Dating mainly from the 18th century, still with the remains of its 8th century Roman and 15th century medieval origins, the Priory has been carefully restored into a harmonious mix of modern comfort and old charm.
The ten apartments are spread throughout the complex of buildings that make up the Priory. They each have their own small private garden or terrace equipped with teak garden furniture and a barbecue and are individually decorated and furnished with 18th and 19th century country furniture, scattered with carpets and the works of young, contemporary painters. There are two large swimming pools, one with a children's pool, both heated outside the summer months. The third pool is a 4 x 8 metre heated indoor pool, maintained at a temperature of 25 degrees all year round. There is also a sauna for 8 people. All the apartments have television and kitchens equipped with a dishwasher and washing machine, an oven and hob, a fridge/freezer or fridge with freezer compartment, microwave, coffee maker and kettle, toaster and ironing facilities. Nine of the ten apartments have central heating.

The Area
Pézenas is an attractive market town and a great favourite with everyone. Once the prosperous seat of the ruling council of Languedoc with a busy cultural life that attracted some of the great writers and thinkers of the day, the centre of the town with its elaborate mansions has hardly changed since the 16th century. There is a wonderful Saturday morning market full of fresh local produce, sometimes plants and flowers, cheeses, meats and seafood, and of course wine. There are cafés and bistros, a variety of shops, antiques shops where you can often find a bargain and, in the oldest part of town, several craft shops. The old Roman town of Béziers is the thriving centre for Languedoc wines with ample opportunity to sample a large variety of good, often excellent wines, both in the caves and directly at the vineyards around it. Lively and energetic with a great love of sport, rugby in particular, the town also has a relaxed southern air about it. The Canal du Midi, which links the Mediterranean with the Atlantic, runs through the town and you can take a cruise or hire a boat for the day, or walk or cycle for miles under the plane trees along the towpath. Béziers has different markets every week and the main covered market is open daily. If there is a chance, St Guilhem-le-Désert is well worth a visit. It is strikingly situated along the the side of a tumbling stream that runs under houses, through gardens and down to the gorge of the River Hérault. The land behind the village is completely enclosed by steep slopes rising up to cliffs, known locally as the Bout du Monde - the End of the World. Each summer there is a month of classical music concerts in the huge Abbey Church there. Travel Information
